The brightest and sexiest season of the year is here- SUMMER! It’s time to check your figure and rummage again through your closet for elegant flowing maxi dresses, knit tops, rompers, canvass bags, swimsuits, flip flops and aviator shades.

And since ’tis the best time to throw parties and get together with friends for a summer getaway in the countryside, it is but imperative for all girls out there to have the following summer time staples at hand.

So prep yourself for a possible summer romance. Get ready for a road trip with your ever trusted bandana and slip into your sexiest bikini while the sun us up, and then don your favorite silk mini dress in the evening and turn the music up. Remember, it’s summer, make everything hotter.

SUMMER WEDDINGS. Aside from chilly weddings during the months of December to February, weddings during summer season has also been a favorite among couples. Destination weddings like beach or garden weddings are best during the season of the sun. Summer garden wedding, especially in the evening, is generally a lovely sight to behold. With all the flowers in bloom, hanging string lights and lanterns adorning the garden, you would want to be as equally stunning as the evening without going overboard.

Photo by Here Comes the Blog

Although there aren’t any general rules when it comes to dressing up for a garden wedding, you must always bear in mind that it is still not advisable to dress too casually or don your sequined and beaded dress for this particular wedding setting, lest you want to compete with the lights beautifully enveloping the plants and trees.

Always remember that the key to dressing up is to always err on the side of elegance. After all, casual or not, a wedding is still a wedding. Opt for bright colored clothing like sunny yellow, calm green, flirty pink dress or choose any color that’s flirty but modern and choose the perfect shade of lipstick and bag to match your outfit. If you are more comfortable with LBDs, then by all means wear it. Black is OK for weddings just as long as you know how to accessorize and play with colors. Wear your dress with red pumps or gold stilettos with a chic pashmina or shawl and you are good to go. Bear in mind that although it is a summer wedding, some evenings tends to be breezy so having a shawl handy is always a wise idea.

On the other hand, dressing up for beach wedding is a lot easier. Look for a light sundress or maxi dress or any elegant dress that feels beachy enough. Although the dress code may be casual, don’t be tempted to wear shorts or jeans. Before shopping for dresses, always refer to the invitation to check if there’s a note about the formality or attire needed for the wedding since beach weddings can actually go from extremely casual to black tie. Lastly, don’t forget to put on a sun block for protection and a shawl in case it is windy.

SUMMER GETAWAY. One important element of traveling is choosing the right ensemble that can last you for a whole day in case your flight gets delayed or the car’s tire suddenly gets busted. Making your way to the check-in counter dressed to the nines, complete with five-inch heels looks fabulous, alright. But can you really pull all your suitcases, laptop bag and find your passport while wearing those killer heels? Choose something that is easy to move around with. Pick clothing that are wrinkle and spill proof, think dark colors and knits.

Although it is advisable to wear comfy clothes during travel, especially when

it’s summer, don’t ever think of wearing summer shorts and tank tops not unless you are headed straight to the beach. Jeans or leggings are safe so you can choose to wear any of the two. Stay comfy but at least look presentable, and yes, skip the flip flops please. Since airport security advises to remove shoes when passing through the screening machine, go for mary jane or ballerina flats instead of rubber shoes to avoid causing long line at the machine. You can wear sleeveless tops or sheer clothing but don’t forget to bring a pashmina to keep you warm and toasty during the flight.

Going on a road trip with family or friends, with your favorite song on the player, window rolled down, is probably one of the most liberating and thrilling thing in this world. And since you are in your own private VIP mode of transportation, then anything actually goes when it comes to choice of clothing. But again, choose something that is wrinkle proof and easy to move around with. Go for loose fitting jeans, chic leggings, summer shorts, tunic tops or layer a tank or tee under a roomy button-down shirt. Choose a pair of trusted sneakers or flats and yes, flip flops is allowed. Always keep a scarf handy to help cover your hair to prevent it from getting messy and sticky or better yet put your hair in a pony tail. Though a floppy sun hat looks adorable too if you’ll ask.

Photo by Love Milk and Honey

If you are heading to the beach, don’t forget to bring a pair or two of your best bikinis, an oversized pair of Jackie O’s, sun block lotions, easy cotton tank dresses, at least two glamorous-island-night-outfits, sundress, flip flops, sandals and sarong. Beach parties at night are very popular so be prepared at all times. There’s no other option but to look your best and glowing if Mr. Surfer guy tries to strike a conversation.

SUNDAY BRUNCH WITH FRIENDS. Nothing is more heart warming than having early Sunday chit chats with your closest buds on a sunny Sunday morning. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and plate of comfort foods like bacons still sizzling when they reach the table, French toast, omelette and freshly squeezed orange juice while catching up on each other’s lives is a luxury that anyone can actually indulge in nearly any day of the week or season.

But admit it or not summer is the best season for brunching because it seem as though food always tastes a little better when you eat outside while a good dose of sunshine is gently touching your skin. Now that being said, even when it’s a Sunday and you have an excuse to dress down a little bit and take a break from being glamorous, it is still necessary for you to mind your wardrobe and ask yourself if it’s appropriate for the occasion.

Match the season with a billowy maxi dress in a gorgeous floral print together with a pretty pair of ballet flats or thong sandals. An adorable romper is also a nice choice since it’s a perfect blend of sundress and shorts, not to mention it’s airy and comfortable when worn. I f you feel a little boyish, a cotton sleeveless tank top or button-down shirt matched with Bermuda shorts or Capri pants is the way to go. And even if it’s summer, always bring with you a cardigan and a scarf for your hair in case it becomes a little humid. To complete your get-up, bring along a big tote, you’ll want plenty of space just in case you decide to drop by in weekend markets and buy yourself some organic products. Lastly, don’t forget your shades, the bigger the better.

HAWAIIAN TROPICAL LUAU PARTY. One of the most popular themes for parties, especially during summer, is Hawaiian luau party. And since this party is associated with summer, it is but necessary and fair to hold it out in the open. Think of grass skirts, leis, tiki torches, palm fronds and tropical fruits with Hawaiian music playing in the background and you’ll know it’s going to be one of your most memorable parties ever. Bring sun and fun into the party by donning your best Hawaiian party dress, tuck a hibiscus flower behind your ear and you’re all set to make heads turn in awe.

Dressing up for a luau party is actually just a walk in the park considering there are lots of shops and boutiques nowadays that offer a complete ensemble to make you instantly look like Lilo. First off, think something floral. It is advisable to wear flower print shirts for men and dresses for women. Floral print polo can be worn buttoned up or open over a plain tee. Add oomph to your outfit by accessorizing with leis, sea shell jewelries, colored beads or anything that looks festive enough for a beach party. Grass skirts looks best when matched with bikini tops for women but men can also wear grass skirts too although most put them on for performance reason only. Proper bottom attire for luau parties, especially for men, is shorts, however, if you are not keen on wearing an over-all floral attire, then sporting a board shorts isn’t a bad idea at all.

Aside from floral dresses and grass skirts, consider adding more flowers like hair garland for girls and pinning some flowers on the gent’s shirt collar or pocket. Lastly, to complete your over-all look, don’t forget to wear your most comfortable flip flops or sandals that best match your outfit, not only they are convenient but also perfect for a laid-back summer look that luaus are all about.

Sunset in Saud Beach

Located in the northernmost tip of the Philippines, Pagudpud is a small, sleepy coastal town in the province of Ilocos Norte. Despite its location (11 hours drive away from Manila), Pagudpud is probably one of the best destinations to go to if you are seeking for a perfect spot to unwind and travel on a shoestring. The province’s tranquil rural communities, rich, unspoiled natural resources and the absence of mass tourism makes Pagudpud even more visit worthy. My friend and I opted for a far-flung hideaway from Manila that is affordable and would not require traveling via plane.

I have heard a lot about how beautiful Pagudpud is and that its beaches can give Boracay a run for its money. The only difference is that the place is not overcrowded and the long bus rides. “Just the perfect place,” I told myself. So, we packed our bags and prepped for a long road trip to the charming, tropical paradise of the north.

Road trip to paradise

My friend and I found ourselves at Partas Bus Station in Cubao to catch the 1:00am trip to Vigan. We decided it would be fun to check out first Ilocos Sur for half a day before heading to Ilocos Norte.

The bus trip to Vigan, which costs Php605 (USD12), can take six to seven hours

Bangui Windmills

depending on the road condition. We were asleep during most of the trip despite of more or less three stopovers. Upon reaching Vigan, We hopped off our bus and roamed the city via kalesa (Php100 or USD2) until lunch. We were able to visit the Vigan Cathedral, Bantay Bell Tower, Burgos Museum, Pinagburnayan, where clay jars are being made and Calle Crisologo. After eating our lunch, we rode again a bus to Laoag (Php400 or USD8) for two hours then another ordinary provincial bus trip to Pagudpud (Php200 or USD4) for another two hours. Thank goodness we went for a brief stopover first in Vigan lest our legs and behind would be numb already.

Rediscovering the hidden gem of the North

Getting around Pagudpud and its neighbouring towns can be done in one whole day. Some hotels and resorts have their own accredited tour guides so better ask for their recommendations. In our case, we were supposed to hire the official tour guide of the resort where we are staying but on our way to

Kaibigan Falls

Pagudpud, a woman who was sitting behind us in the bus noticed that we’re tourists and recommended his husband to be our tour guide. We were hesitant at first but seeing how insistent her husband was when we were texting with him, that he even agreed to give us a cheaper rate for the tour, we finally gave in and got Kuya Lenzer (09068185735).

The rest is actually history because ever since that tour of ours, Kuya Lenzer is now one of most popular and recommended tour guides in Pagudpud. Not to mention he was already able to buy himself a van out of his savings from being a tour guide. He’s now touring in Laoag and Vigan as well. At about 8:00am the next day, Kuya Lenzer, with his trusted tricycle, was outside our resort awaiting to start our whole-day tour. Touring Pagudpud costs Php1,00.00 (USD20) and that already includes its adjacent towns like Bangui and Burgos.

First stop that day was Cape Bojeador in Burgos. The lighthouse, which was completed on March 30, 1892, is a 45-minute to one-hour drive from Pagudpud and is known for being the highest lighthouse in the Philippines. Despite being old and rusty, Cape Bojeador is still functioning and gives signals to passing ships along the Cape. It was said that watching sunset at the lighthouse is simply breathtaking but I also heard creepy stories about this century old beacon so I shun the thought of spending the dawn there.

But if you are the adventurous type, then go ahead, anyway there’s nothing to

Patapat Viaduct

lose. Also in Burgos, Ilocos Norte is the majestic Kapurpurawan Rock Formation. These white-colored sedimentary rocks were naturally shaped by strong winds and waves from the West Philippine Sea. Kapurpurawan’s unique ashen beauty is very well complemented by the azure sky and sapphire sea of Ilocos. This place is really a must-see when you are in Ilocos Norte. Better wear durable footwear because the rocks tend to be slippery and spiky corals are everywhere. The term Kapurpurawan is taken for the Ilocano root word “puraw”, which means white. It was also said that the rock formation is even whiter during the months of April and May, another good reason in heading to the north during summer. What my friend and I were excited about was to come face-to-face with the famous Bangui Windmills. Seeing the windmills will definitely leave you awestruck and speechless. The giant mills that look like white robots or aliens are definitely a sight to behold in Ilocos Norte. These giant electric fans are used to generate electricity in the province, and at the same time, serve as a major tourist attraction.

Before heading back to the town of Pagudpud, take a quick lunch first at Kangkang Café, located near the southern end of the windmills. Its name never fails to elicit laughter from Tagalog-speaking visitors, but the fact is that Kangkang is actually the name of the barangay where the cafe is located, thus earning its funny-sounding name. The cabana café serves heavy to light meals so you actually have a wide array of food to choose from. Tourists say that their dark roasted coffee and Iced Kangkang Brew taste really good so I have yet to try them.

Bantay Abot Cave

Trekking to Kaibigan Falls right after a hearty lunch at Kangkang Café is one of the best ways to digest the food faster. The trek to Kaibigan Falls, a not so steep falls in the middle of a forest, will eat up 30 minutes but is still worth the trek. It’s like finding a secret paradise in the middle of nowhere. The water is freezing cold so taking a quick dip is a great idea to freshen up. Entrance fee is only Php10 (less than USD1) and while there is no standard fee for the trek tour guide, acceptable amount would be Php100 (USD2).

Another favorite spot for jump shots is the Patapat Viaduct. This is the only road you have to pass through in order for you to reach Cagayan from Pagudpud. This elevated, winding, concrete highway, with a marvelous view of the West Philippine Sea, was constructed beside the cliffs of Cordillera Mountain Range to solve the problem of landslides in the area that have caused many vehicular accidents in the past. Patapat Viaduct is also considered as the fourth longest bridge in the Philippines at about 1.5 kilometers long and around 30 meters above sea level. Usually, after the brief

Timmantang Rock

stopover at Patapat Viaduct, the next stops will be Aqua Grande and Paraiso ni Anton. Don’t ask who Anton is because no one—not even the locals—knows him. To save time, you may skip these two spots because there’s really nothing special about them. Aqua Grande is a sort of infinity pool with big boulders that meets the sea. Entrance fee is Php25 (less than USD1).

Paraiso ni Anton, on the other hand, is a mini-falls along the road with steps leading to a grotto. Travelers who pass by to go to Cagayan usually get water from the natural drinking water from the falls which is also said to be miraculous. Another must-see attraction in Pagudpud is the Bantay Abot Cave. This cave is a natural sculptured cave that has a hole in the center. It offers a great view of the sea and is a nice spot to take pictures. A few meters away is the Timmantang Rock, a bell-shaped rock covered with grass and bushes that also gives a great view of Sitio Gaoa when you climb its top. These two rocks are collectively known as the “Lover’s Rock”. Bantay Abot is supposedly the female and Timmantang is the male. In my opinion, the Bantay Abot Cave is more worth visiting than the latter. Bantay Abot Cave looks more mystical while Timmantang Rock looks very ordinary to me.

Blue Lagoon

Our last stop for the day and what we also consider as the tour’s highlight is our trip to Blue Lagoon or commonly known as the “Boracay of the North”. The water is crystal blue as the name implies. The powdery, white sand is very fine like that of Boracay, and to top it off, the place is not overcrowded. But if you are someone who loves parties and rubbing elbows with strangers, then this place is definitely not for you. Pagudpud has no nightlife so don’t expect fire dancers and trance music playing in the background. Waves are really big in Blue Lagoon or Maira-ira Beach so if you are not a good swimmer better shun away from the idea of swimming far from the shore, unless you are a surfer and the mere sight of four- to six-foot waves excites you.

Finding solace in Pagudpud

Upon getting back to where we are billeted in Saud Beach late in the afternoon, we were surprised to see the breathtaking sunset, which I now consider to be one of the best that I have ever seen. The silhouette of coconut palm trees against the fiery sunset is picture-perfect. I rested in one of the hammocks admiring the sun while it is slowly bidding farewell with all its grandeur, and me, thinking how fascinating Pagudpud is… how beautiful the Philippines is. I told myself that I would definitely be back in this quaint province up north someday soon.

Postscript: If you have motion sickness and can’t stand a long bus trip, you may opt to ride a plane to Laoag then ask your tour guide to just pick you up at the airport. Before heading home, don’t forget to buy some Bangui Windmill souvenirs and Ilocos’ famous “chichacorn” (crispy corn snacks). Florida bus plies a direct route from Manila to Pagudpud and vice versa. Bus fare costs Php600-Php700 (USD12-14). The bus has its own toilet to make the trip convenient for passengers.

Visiting Batanes is one of the few things in my “Bucket List”, so I consider my summer of 2008 one for the books.

My friend and I should have gone to Palawan that year but I strongly disapproved of the idea because Batanes was number one on my “List of Places to See Before I Die.”

Unlike Boracay, which is highly commercialized and swarming with people, Batanes, the smallest province in the Philippines, is the total opposite. Life in Batanes is very laidback with a population of only more or less 17,000. Only a few have been to this quaint province in the North so being there for the first time is like stepping out of a local closet to Narnia.

Aside from the little information I gathered: that the plane ride is a little rough and that Batanes is always the entry and exit point of typhoons; I was totally clueless on what to expect. All I knew then was that I will be seeing paradise. So I shunned all ideas of the dangers people were talking about. I couldn’t care less. Besides, I love adventure! The round trip air fare to Batanes, which costs around Php12, 000-13,000, was very much worth it.

Batanes is located in the northernmost tip of the Philippines where the Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea meet. Because of its location, rough waters and unpredictable weather are expected in the province. It is composed of 10 islands and only 3 are inhabited: Batan, Sabtang and Itbayat.

In my opinion, people who plan to go there should first watch the two movies shot there to get a feel of what to see and look for in Batanes. Those two movies are “Batanes” and “Kadin.”

Batanes Bound

As early as 3:00AM, my friend and I can be seen with our luggage at the Old Manila Domestic Airport for our 5:30AM flight. We both lacked sleep that time but we couldn’t care less. We were just a few hours away from our dream destination.

I was giddy as a child as the plane ascended into the sky. More so when the plane descended into the land where East meets West. True enough, the flight was a little bit turbulent but not that scary at all.

The plane landed at Basco early in the morning and as was expected, I hurriedly hopped off the plane together with my friend. We looked for the placard that read “Batanes Resort”, which I easily spotted among the crowd waiting outside the airport.

While inside the van provided by the resort, I told myself time and again that “Toni! You’re actually now in Batanes, this isn’t a dream!” Yes, never have I imagined that I would be able to step foot on to this paradise.

Everything was so perfect. I can actually live in Batanes and mingle with the Ivatans. But of course, I have to learn their native dialect first, which by the way, sounds a little like Chinese. Being situated near Taiwan explains why, I guess.

Batanes Resort is actually the best place to stay in Basco next to the Fundacion Pacita. It is located 10 minutes away from the airport and just along the main thorough fare in Basco. Each room is a single detached unit made out of stones, just like the native stone houses of the Ivatans, which made the place very cool. Your mornings will be greeted by cows busily eating their grass breakfast just a few meters from your room. It’s not an exaggeration when I say that there are more cows than people in Batanes.

The Road Less Traversed

Since Basco is very small, one can actually travel around the whole island in a day. Like I was told, Batanes is best travelled by foot or bicycle. I also heard that when you are in Batanes, you’d feel that you are not in the Philippines anymore. I found this very WRONG! Rather, when you are in Batanes, you are compelled to say that this is how beautiful the PHILIPPINES is!

Scenic Landscapes

Aside from the green pastures of Marlboro Country and Rolling Hills, the majestic statures of Mahatao, and Basco orNaidi Lighthouses were really sights to behold. Unfortunately, I found out that no one can really have a good hair day in Batanes, especially when you are in the Marlboro Country or Payaman because of the strong winds.

Marlboro Country got its name because it looks so much like the setting of the commercial for Marlboro cigarette. On the other hand, the Windows desktop wallpaper-like landscape of Payaman is breathtaking and best for those picture perfect shots, except your hair won’t be perfect in the picture.

Historical Structures

Batanes also has many century old Dominican churches like the San Carlos Borromeo Church, which is the first church in Mahatao that was built during the 19th century. Near the church is the oldest and smallest light house in Basco.

Lamp was being used then to light the said light house which served as a guide for offshore fishermen on their way home. The church is considered as one of the National Cultural Treasures by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) because of its cultural significance and architecture.

Like the San Carlos Borromeo Church, San Jose de Ivana Church is also made of limestone with original baroque architecture. The church was built during the 19th century by Dominican priests.

The House of Dakay is considered to be the oldest house in Batanes and is located in Ivana. The stone house was built in 1887 out of limestones and corals and it was said that this is the only house that survived the strong earthquake that hit the island a few years after it was built. The current owner of the ancestral house is Lola Florestida Estrella, an Ivatan woman in her mid 80’s.

Interesting Spots

Tempt and test yourself by visiting the famous Honesty Café. The honesty of the people visiting there is put to test as there is no one manning the store. Just get what you want and put the exact payment in a box provided.

On the way to your next spot, you will pass by several sites that might be of interest to you like the Ghost Townor the Ruins of Songsong and the abandoned US Coast Guard Station. The town of Songsong was hit by a tsunami in 1953, the houses were destroyed, although there were no casualties from the said disaster and the people abandoned this seaside community, thus earning the nickname Ghost Town. The residents of Songsong were evacuated to provinces in Mindanao.

Before ending our first day in Batanes, we decided to visit Radar Tukon, a weather station on a hill. Tukon is an Ivatan word for hill. The place gives you a 360-degree view of Batan Island. If you are into photography, doing a panoramic shot of the landscape is a perfect idea. Here you can see the Pacific Ocean in the East, South China Sea in the West, Mt. Iraya on the North and rolling hills leading up to Mt. Matarem in the South.

Beside Radar Tukon is the island’s PAGASA station. A few steps away is the newly built Tukon Church and Fundacion Pacita Abad, a small gallery of the renowned Ivatan international painter Pacita Abad, (sister of DBM Secretary Butch Abad) who is known for her modern and colorful works of art. This is also where the Fundacion Pacita Nature Lodge is situated; a posh lodging house in Batanes where you can get a majestic view of Batanes’ rolling hills, cliffs and sea.

Getting to Know the Ivatans

On our second day, we decided to visit the neighboring island Sabtang. TheFalowa (the Ivatan’s boat that looks like Noah’s Arc) ride was an adventure. Ivatans are very astute people as they know how the wind and the waters work. They did not put any outrigger in their boats so as not to have to fight off the big waves.

I was sitting and getting a video of the whole bumpy ride while people inside the boat were screaming upon seeing big waves that were ready to capsize our boat. Yes, the waves were bigger than our boat. I actually found the ride fun and I wouldn’t mind doing it all over again even though I don’t know how to swim.

Sabtang Island

The 30-minute trip to Sabtang Island is like riding the Rio Grande and the Jungle Log Jam in Enchanted Kingdom. Be ready to get wet.

Sabtang Island will give you a feel of how the Ivatans live a simple life. I say that the highlight of the tour in Sabtang was the visit to the town of Chavayan where we saw the community of Ivatans and actually saw them making vakuls.

Vakul is the Ivatan women’s headgear that is used to protect them from rain, wind and sun, it’s counterpart for men are called Talugong. Vakuls are made out of Philippine palm dates leaves and usually costs Php400 plus but cheaper depending on its size while Talugong ranges from Php500-Php800. They also sell very unique Ivatan slippers used in fishing which costs Php 150.00 and Kanayi or vest also made out of date’s leaves.

If you want to take a picture of the elderly Ivatans and the kids, they are very willing to pose for you so grab the chance to take a souvenir photo with them. I think they are already used to tourists taking photos of them so they already know what to do when you aim the camera at them. Needless to say, before leaving Chavayan, we bought small vakuls and Ivatan slippers.

During our lunch, we had a taste of the famous Coconut Crab at the picturesque Nakabuang Arch. Aside from the Coconut Crab, a must try when in Batanes is their half a day old daing. Be sure to request for it and take some home.

In the afternoon, although we were already tired with burnt skin and all (The weather was so chilly that we forgot to put sun block on.), we still wandered through the town of Basco with our rented bikes. As we watched the sunset at Basco Port, a realization dawned upon me that time: This is where I want to grow old and retire, in Batanes. It’s really the closest place you can get to whisper to God.

What really defines an intimate wedding? Small venue, small number of guests or limited budget? I say, Intimate wedding is a perfect way to celebrate your biggest day with love ones. Aside from being relaxed on your special day because you are surrounded by close friends and family, your wedding day will be less stressful as it will just feel like a family and friends gathering rather than a big production. Not to mention you will be able to save extra bucks to start your family.

This is not to say though that you cannot splurge on your wedding day. Some couples opt to have limited guests not necessarily because they don’t have enough budget, rather, they choose to spend their money into something that really matters to them. Like designer gowns, destination wedding venues or a great jazz band.

Nowadays, intimate weddings are becoming more popular among couples and destination wedding is probably the number one choice for brides and grooms when tying the knot. Now, that being said, listed are some of the best places in the Philippines that promise you a romantic and one of a kind wedding celebration that you won’t forget sans the big preparation and a wedding coordinator.

Photo taken from Fundacion Pacita Website

Tukon Chapel, Batanes. Tukon Chapel in Batanes is a relatively new chapel in Basco. The chapel’s construction only started last 2008 and is just a few steps away from Fundacion Pacita. Tukon Chapel has life-size paintings of saints installed in its ceilings, all made by young Ivatan artists who are all scholars of The Pacita Abad Center for the Arts.

With breath taking views of both South China Sea and Pacific Ocean, Tukon (Ivatan word for mountain) Chapel is probably one of the best places to go to for a cinematic wedding. The chapel’s stained glass windows, pews of recycled hardwood and a facade that can be likened to the traditional Ivatan stone house make this chapel very unique. Tukon Chapel is a project of the Abad family, dedicated to their parents whose main desire when they were still living was to be able to walk to the nearest chapel or church. Today, the couple is now buried in the Abad pastureland in Tukon.

Photo taken from Fundacion Pacita Website

The Fundacion Pacita Batanes Nature Lodge, which is nestled atop rolling hills of Tukon, gives one a 270-degree view of the sea and rolling hills of Batan. It was once a home studio of internationally-acclaimed Trapunto artist Pacita Abad which was reconditioned by his brother, DBM Secretary Butch Abad, who revealed that before his sister died, wanted her studio to become a lodge where guests, specifically artists, photographers and hobbyist, nature lovers, yoga enthusiasts and similar groups could stay, thus the nature lodge was born to provide everyone serene accommodations amid the lush garden and pasture land of Tukon. Every room of Fundacion Pacita was designed to resemble an art gallery with walls carefully adorned by masterpieces of various artists.

Any couple can be mesmerized by the amazing view from the terrace in all of Fundacion’s room. Waking up being greeted by the cool breeze, rolling hills, cliffs and sea is definitely an experience you would want to share with your husband or wife.

Thus, if you are looking for a laid back wedding, away from the cacophonic Manila, with few selected guests, (mind you, air fare to Batanes is very costly at Php13,000 for a roundtrip so you might want to trim down your guest list) then going for a Batanes wedding is definitely something that should top your list.

Monastery of Transfiguration, Bukidnon. The monastery of the Benedictine Monks or commonly known as the Monastery of Transfiguration, located at Barangay San Jose in Malaybalay City, Bukidnon, is a three hour drive away from the City of Golden Friendship Cagayan de Oro. This pyramid shape chapel has been a favorite destination for couples who seek a tranquil and solemn wedding celebration. The chapel is nestled on top of a small hill giving people a breath taking view of the Bukidnon mountains or Mount Kitanglad to be specific.

Monastery of Transfiguration’s chapel was designed by no less than the late National Artist for Architecture Leandro Locsin and the plans of the chapel was said to be the last he signed before he passed away.

The chilly weather in Bukidnon, topped with a well manicured lawn and mountain backdrop make the monastery a perfect place for a picturesque wedding. Aside from holding wedding ceremonies inside the chapel, its well maintained garden full of flowers in bloom can also serve as a reception area for a nature-themed wedding. It is also here in this serene place where the Benedictine monks live in vow of silence and life of continued prayer. If you want to experience the full tranquility and peace of the place, the monastery is definitely the perfect center for a spiritual retreat.

Aside from its chapel, which is dubbed as “Magnum Opus”, a Latin word which means “Great Work”, the monastery is also known for its Monk’s Blend Arabica Robusta Coffee, this coffee is produce, grown and processed by the Benedictine Monks themselves and available at the monastery’s souvenir shop. Come to think of it, this best seller coffee can also be a great idea for your wedding giveaways.

Photo taken from Pulchra Resort Website

Pulchra Resort, San Isidro Cebu. Want a beach wedding but is looking for something unique that can make your friends green with envy? Then how does walking down the aisle amid the sea with nothing but views of the ocean and the sunset sounds?

An intimate wedding especially arranged in Pulchra’s floating chapel with a magnificent view of the sea, complete with all the things that a couple needs for a private wedding is readily available in Pulchra Resort, making the most significant event of your life worry free. From hair and make-up, flower bouquet for the bride, corsage for the groom, live musicians, flower shower, wedding coordinator down to the flower girl, ring and coin bearer. You name it and Pulchra got it covered.

Photo taken from Pulchra Resort Website

Aside from these things that come with Pulchra’s wedding package, the couple may also opt to avail of the photo and video coverage, wedding party at their fine dining Opus Restaurant and the wedding dress rental. Yes, you read that right, wedding dress. Pulchra Resort has a rental wedding gown collection that comes in four styles, simple, elegant and classical style or a choice of Maria Clara fashion & Girly Sweet Gown. Now that’s really being practical especially if you are someone who wants to give more importance to the wedding venue than your bridal dress.

And since the ceremony will be held in a floating chapel, might as well be reminded again that this type of wedding is really intimate that guests above fifteen in number cannot be accommodated anymore in the chapel.

Exchanging I do’s in the most intimate and passionate way; being witnessed by people who are really close to you; surrounded by tropical flowers in a secret paradise against the azure sky and ocean; what more could you ask for?

Bellarocca Island Resort and Spa, Marinduque. Want a Mediterranean wedding in the middle of a secluded island down south of the Philippines? Then a Bellarocca wedding is definitely for you. This Philippines’ version of Santorini, an all-white building on rolling terrain against the lush green surrounding and sapphire sky and sea of Marinduque, make this resort and spa a dream destination especially for couples and honeymooners.

Bellaroca Island Resort and Spa has been a witness to many weddings already and the privacy and exclusivity of the place make each and every wedding truly an intimate one.

Bellarocca, which means “beautiful rock”, can be reached via speed boat or yacht from the mini port of Buenavista, Marinduque. The lush tropical garden and golf course of the resort has been a favorite wedding spot among couples with Mt. Malindig serving as a backdrop. The rate in Bellarocca can be quite daunting at first but if you’ve been clamoring for a wedding in your very own island (well at least just for a day) then the steep price is definitely worth every penny you will shed.

Aside from its distinct Greek inspired architecture, the resort prides itself with a lap pool and infinity pool, seaside pavilion, Marina Cafe and Bar, Wi-Fi, golf course, natural hot spring pool, library, meeting room, game room, gym, medical clinic, aqua sports center, and spa, among others.

Now, what makes this wedding destination intimate? Simply because going to Marinduque province is quite pricey already considering Zest Air is the only airline that flies to the province. Aside from the airfare, the budget per person in Bellarocca already costs an arm so you really need to be mindful of the finances. However, if you have more than enough money to splurge, then go ahead, invite every people you know, but that actually doesn’t make sense anymore since over crowding the resort kills its relaxing and serene ambiance so I wouldn’t dare do that If I were you.

Every page makes me want to flip again to the next page to find out what’s going to happen next.

At first, the book seems boring, but as you get to the middle part it, you’ll never want to put the book down again.

With the book “Ang Mga Kaibigan ni Mama Susan”, I can now say that Bob Ong is really a versatile writer. He made us laugh in his first book “ABNKKBSNPLAKO”, opened our eyes to the society we’re living in with “Bakit Baligtad Magbasa ng Libro Ang Mga Pilipino” and made us sad with “Mac Arthur” because of its tragic story. And now this book of Bob Ong will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat.

I never thought Bob Ong will write a suspense story because as we all know, almost all his books are funny and at times satirical so this is really not so him. But hey, turned out good so i’ll wait for more. Maybe a sequel?

All I can say is read “Ang Mga Kaibigan ni Mama Susan”…ALONE. Do it in one sitting so you won’t kill the momentum and suspense.

Good news is Pinoy All Occasions already did all the legwork for you. Below are some of the events, places and restaurants you can choose from this coming Heart’s Day, depending on your taste and budget.

1. Hot Air Balloon Fiesta, Pampanga. The annual Hot Air Balloon Fiesta is the most anticipated event in Clark Freeport Zone, Pampanga every second week of February. Heart’s Day usually falls anywhere during this one week festival but this year, the 17th Philippine Hot Air Balloon Fiesta will commence on February 9 until February 12, just two days before Valentine’s Day. Entrance fee is Php200.00.

The balloon fiesta aims to fuel the passion of people, both young and old, into flying to help the aviation industry and tourism in the Philippines. On the other hand, this event also helps to instill discipline and volunteerism to participating young pilots. Aside from the 6:30 AM flight of the hot air balloons, which is represented by various countries, the event is also jam packed with lots of aerial activities and exhibitions everyday like skydiving, paragliding, aerobatics, ultralight flights, RC aircraft displays, professional kite exhibitions and more.

The PHABF (Philippine Hot Air Balloon Fiesta) is definitely a one of a kind place to be with your love one to celebrate Valentine’s Day. And any returning guests of the fiesta can attest that the balloon fiesta has been a witness to various marriage proposals already. If you plan to propose to your girlfriend in the most unique way, then how about a proposal in the sky sounds? If you want everyone to know how you love your girlfriend so much, go to PHABF, talk to the skydiving crew and ask if they can do you a favor of diving your marriage proposal banner for you. An act that will definitely sweep your girl off her feet that saying “no” wouldn’t be an option.

To complete the romantic experience, it is highly suggested for you to at least book an overnight stay to any hotel inside the Clark Freeport Zone. If you have more than enough budget and want to stay in a swanky hotel, you may try Fontana Resort and Country Club, but if you are working on a tight budget but still want an overnight romantic get away with your sweetie, then Clark Hostel, a cozy, boutique hotel inside Clark is definitely a must try. And since you are already in Pampanga, what’s a date without a dinner in a fine dining restaurant? C Italian Dining, located along Don Juico Avenue in Angeles City, Pampanga was said to be one of the best Italian restaurants in the Philippines. The place is always packed with people, especially during weekends so it is best to book your reservation ahead of time.

BUDGET: Starts at Php2, 000- Php6, 000 good for two (depends if you opt to stay overnight and eat at C’s)

2. The Oasis, Gateway Mall. Located right smack in the middle of Gateway

Photo taken from The Oasis' Multiply site

Mall in Cubao, The Oasis offers shoppers a breath of fresh air with their 450- square meter garden restaurant that opens up to the sky . Accentuated by towering 60-foot royal palm trees, exotic giant ferns, koi pond, small fountain and pipe-in music under the sun or blanket of stars, this floating garden is the perfect ambiance for a romantic date with your beau.

The place looks quite intimidating at first but surprisingly, a date at The Oasis is actually affordable as it has a wide variety of dishes from nearby restaurants like Rasa, Café Adriatico, Pizza Hut Bistro, Sachi and Itallianis.

Aside from candlelit dinners, The Oasis is also open for private functions, definitely a great idea for al fresco cocktail parties. Now who says Valentine dinners need to be expensive? At The Oasis, you can enjoy a lush tropical setting without having to drive hours away from Manila.

BUDGET: Php 2,000 good for two (depends on your choice of food)

3. T House, Tagaytay. T House is a Zen type boutique hotel located along Calamba Road in Tagaytay. The “T” in T House stands for tranquility and the word already speaks for itself.
4. Antonio’s, Tagaytay. Antonio’s was once named as the 5thtop

Photo taken from Antonio's Website

restaurant in Asia and it won’t be named as such for nothing. In fact, it was the only Philippine entry in Asia’s Top 20 for 2010/2011 list of the Miele Guide, which covers 450 restaurants in 17 countries.

The raves about this old mansion turned posh restaurant in the hilly and chilly Tagaytay are just too convincing that it’s hard not to give Antonio’s a try despite of its costly price.

Tucked in the countryside, this one-hectare compound has been a favorite spot for dinner dates, especially during Valentine’s Day so doing a reservation few weeks before your planned date is a must. In fact, some even put their booking as early as two months prior to their dinner date.

Aside from its delectable food, which are organically grown and harvested straight from Antonio’s farm, the restaurant’s perfect ambiance and service are just some of the things that make this place famous and the number one choice for people who have enough budget and willing to drive two hours away from Manila just to experience the best romantic dining anyone could ever wish for. Mind you, it’s hard to find any negative reviews about Antonio’s or maybe none at all, so that’s already a statement of how perfect Antonio’s is. Curious already? See and try for yourself to find out. And to quote the owner Antonio, “Antonio’s is much more than a restaurant. It is an experience — an experience that each and every guest should savor and share.”

BUDGET: Php4, 000 good for two

5. Yacht Cruise. How does the sound of cruising in a 70ft luxury yacht, feasting on a gourmet four course dinner while listening to a violinist playing on the background under moonlight sounds? Romantic? If this idea excites you, then celebrating Valentine’s with Real Yacht’s Valentine’s Cruise is for you.

Cruise in the sea of love like Gwyneth Paltrow and Huey Lewis in a two hour intimate dinner (fine dining set-up) with your partner and bathe under the stars and dress to the nines for a picture perfect photo souvenir with your special someone while onboard M/Y Shanti or Real Yacht’s “Party Yacht”. Nothing can be more romantic than having a date in a posh yacht, watching the city lights from afar with some sentimental music in the background. Riding a yacht is a rare experience as it is very expensive to rent one so might as well grab this opportunity.

This Valentine Cruise costs at a premium of Php3, 500 per head with only limited slots (10 couples) available so better make your reservations now. On the other hand, if you want a little more privacy with your valentine and got money to burn, then renting a private yacht isn’t a bad idea at all. Real Yacht also offers yacht rentals ranging from transportation services to event venues. This yacht company has been a venue of choice for private parties like debuts and weddings, promotional events, magazine pictorials, product launches and even movie shoots. Only goes to show that you’re in good hands if you want to prepare something extra special for the most special woman in your life.

BUDGET: Php7, 000 good for two

So he finally popped the question and with teary-eye, you said YES! You are now engaged, Congratulations future bride!

Planning your wedding can be pretty exciting and stressful but choosing the perfect wedding gown that you will wear on the day when you’ll finally say “I do” to you Prince Charming will probably be one of the most nerve wracking decisions of your life. Don’t fret, we’ve got you covered.

Donning the most flattering and eye-catching bridal dress is probably almost every woman’s dream, so before heading to the nearest bridal shop, here are few guidelines that will help all girls out there to get started to becoming the most beautiful blushing bride.

WEDDING THEME. Identifying the theme of your wedding is the first step in determining what kind of bridal dress you should wear. Will it be a strictly black tie event or just semi-formal? Wedding themes can also be anything from beach wedding, garden, fantasy down to the hip rockstar theme. Anyway, it’s your wedding, so whichever theme you choose will definitely determine the style of the wedding dress you should get. You wouldn’t want to wear a ball gown with matching stilletos in the beaches of Boracay, would you?

FIND YOUR FIT. Determining your body shape plays a very crucial role in finding the perfect wedding dress for you. Enhance your assets and natural features and downplay the areas that aren’t so perfect. Find a gown that will flatter your figure no matter what size or shape it is. One key to knowing whether the gown is perfect for you is if you feel good and comfortable in it. Wearing that mermaid or trumpet style wedding dress maybe flattering for your curvaceous body but if you can barely walk few meters while wearing it, ditch it!

If you have an hour glass type of body, meaning, having the right cuves at the right place, (big chest, big hips, and a thin waist) then a mermaid or trumpet gown works best for your figure. An A-line dress with a sweetheart neckline to show off your chest is also a great idea to celebrate your body.

For brides who are small on top and heavy on the bottom, a ball gown will do

wonders of covering your bottom half to give more focus on the upper part of your body. A pear-shaped body should shun away from tight fitting bottom like a mermaid-style gown as it will help draw attention to your bottom.

If you are a voloptuous bride with full breasts, a bit of a tummy, and round hips and butt, then a ball gown wedding dress will hide quite a bit and a scooped neckline will help open up your face while displaying your décolletage without being to revealing. Avoid a neckline that goes straight across as it will only make your bust appear even bigger. To hide the little flabs in the middle, opting for an Empire-waist wedding dress will deemphasize your waistline. It helps bring the attention on the upper part of your body and smooth out the middle.

Thin brides make a perfect fairy tale wedding princess by choosing a ball gown and a sheath. Avoid off-the-shoulder and halter neckline if your collarbone is too bony as it would look very unflattering. For petite women, A-line works well for your tiny frame. Find gowns with waistline above your natural wasitline to create an illusion of longer lower half. Shun away from ball gowns as it may be too overwhelming. You wouldn’t want to get lost in that voluminous skirt, would you?

DRESS FOR THE SEASON. Some tends to overlook this, but choosing the fabric for your wedding dress is as equally important as choosing it’s style. Choose a dress that makes you feel good. Destination weddings are popular nowadays so aside from considering the season, take into account the place where your wedding will also be held. Will it be an outdoor or indoor event? For weddings between February to March, it is best to use medium weight satin or cottonseed hulls. Your wedding or reception location may still have some cold days so make sure you also have a shawl handy just in case you need it.

For summer weddings, whether it be indoors or outdoors, choose a wedding dress that will keep you cool during the whole ceremony. Picking a backless or strapless gown made of lightweight material is definitely the way to go. You don’t want your make up to smudge and look wasted on your big day due to sweat. If you want some sleeves on your gown, consider having a lace sleeves or maybe a short mini wedding dress would do. Mini dresses for weddings are very popular nowadays for modern brides, so if you want to veer away from traditional bridal gowns, then mini dresses are for you. Mini dresses are great for beach weddings or any casual weddings, this can even be your reception dress as well.

If your wedding date falls during the months of November, December or January, don’t go heavy on your choice of fabric because tendency is, even if it is cold, once the room or place is packed, it will eventually feel warmer. Also, using light materials can be an advantage if you tend to sweat when nervous

PICK YOUR COLOR. The traditional wedding gown is white but who says you

always have to stick to the norm? Current trend right now is to add a splash of color in your wedding gown. Adding some oomph in your dress by adding a soft whisper of another color can sometimes enhance your beauty than the usual boring white. Adding a colored ribbon, beads or a hint of color in your train looks gorgeous so do not be afraid to experiment. If you are not that adventurous when it comes to clothing, then going for an ivory or beige gown also works.

THE RECEPTION DRESS. Some tend to skip this part for practicality, but getting a reception dress is very important for your comfort. Reception dress is still part of the wedding dress selection since this is what you are going to wear for the whole reception ceremony after you first dance with your husband. Having a reception dress is a wise idea if you want to keep your expensive wedding gown in a mint and pristine condition, keeping it away from food, fingerprints and spilled

beverages. Not to mention you will have the freedom to dance all night without worrying about itchy layers and accidental tripping.

The general idea is that the first wedding gown you will wear for the matrimonial ceremony will be more formal and traditional while the second gown will be more sexier and fun. Just don’t over do it, choose a short dress that still looks bridal because the last thing you would want is to blend in with the guests once you have made your change.

So, how do you choose the perfect reception dress that will still make you stand out among the crowd? First and foremost, find a dress that matches the style of your first gown. They don’t need to be identical, rather, create an element of contrast between the two to spark interest. Your personal style can be a big factor in choosing the perfect reception dress for you. The fun part in the selection of a reception dress is that this is a relatively a new phenomenon so there aren’t many rules that will get in the way of your creativity. Just keep in mind the venue and formality of the occasion so be wary not to go overboard. If you picked the right dress, whether it be short or long, you can still wear it in the future for other events.

Reception dresses can also go after your wedding theme. If your wedding theme is fantasy like Drew Barrymore’s “Happily Ever After”, then donning a stunning fairy wings with your white, flowy dress, flower crown and flower wand will instantly transform you into a blushing fairy bride.

GET SOME HONEST TO GOODNESS ADVICE. Troop to at least three

bridal shops with your girl friends or a mix of girl friend cousin and wedding coordinator if you happen to have one. Just make sure that these people will actually let out honest to goodness opinions on your choice of wedding gowns.

These people should have the courage and concern to tell you that your arms looks flabby with that spaghetti strap and your hips looks a little bigger on that mermaid style gown. On the other hand, even if you’ve been dreaming of wearing a ball gown for your wedding since you were a kid, but sad to say the style doesn’t flatter your figure and well, height, it’s time to open up your mind when shopping for your dream dress. Step outside of the box and try various styles, ask your friends for opinions. You may not know it but they may have better ideas than you actually thought. Show what you’ve got instead of hiding it, after all it is your big day and there’s no other option but to look fabulous.

How time flies, 2012 is here. The year the world is going to end, or so what almost everyone thinks. Blame it on the film 2012.

And as my traditional year end report, I will be presenting this time, in no particular order, the highlights of my year 2011. ^_^ (Thank God for the blessings!)

1. TRANSFER OF LAND TITLE UNDER MY NAME. I mentioned in my year ender last year that I was informed by my developer and PAGIBIG that the transfer of the land title under my name is currently on process. This year, I was able to secure a copy of the title with my name in it. ^_^ But I have to mention though that this is still not the original copy since my house is not yet fully paid. Nevertheless, this is still an achievement for me.

2. GETTING MY HOUSE FIXED. Finally, before Christmas, I was able to get my front yard landscaped, put a nice, loft type ceiling and paint the interiors white. I already bought some curtains and curtain rods and next on my list is having the floor tiled. I already alloted money for it so my target is right after New Year. Hopefully I can have my house furnished in no time. It will just be a studio type for now since I still don’t have enough money to construct a loft type house.

3. VIETNAM TRIP. I’ve been to lots of places for the year 2011 but my only international trip for this year, which is in Vietnam, is what I considered very memorable and special. Aside from the fact that it was a rather long vacation, not our usual 3 days and 2 nights stay, having a good company in the person of Liz, Hazel and Anne made it more fun. This historical and cultural trip to Ho Chi Minh is definitely one for the books. This is the first time we felt how’s it like to be a millionaire. Hehehe. The food trippings, shopping spree and drinking sessions every night were superb! Like Batanes, I would like to go back again to Vietnam very soon. I feel at home there even though I was having a hard time understanding their english at first. Well, we eventually get used to it after a day. ^_^

4. EXPLORING THE PHILIPPINES. Vietnam is our choice of international destination for 2011 but visiting local places in the Philippines is definitely something that I always look forward to ever year. Even though our budget is always limited, we never let money get in the way of our exploration. We always find a way to check out budget fares and affordable but nice hotels. ^_^ For the year 2011, I’ve/We’ve been to Guimaras and Iloilo (March) Marinduque (for the nth time), Corregidor and Palawan (April) Vietnam and Baguio (August) , Cagayan de Oro, Bukidnon and Antique (November). For the year 2012, our calendar is already full and cannot accommodate anymore trips, not unless they are for FREE. Hehehe. If you want to invite us for an all-expense-paid trip, check out our calendar of trips and try to squeeze in. Again, we only accept all-expense-paid trip. Hahaha. No more money to shed. Coron (March), Marinduque (April), El Nido, Palawan (June), Malaysia (September).

***********************************************************************************************************

Before laying out my blueprint for 2012, let’s look back on my 2011 blueprint and see if I was able to accomplish some.

I will get my house fixed so I can go there every week end and design it for the next Halloween and Christmas. Even studio type bungalow will do for now. (Hmmm…haven’t spent my Halloween and Christmas in my house yet but I’m on my way. It’s soon to be tiled.)

Exercise in whatever form. Boxing again, badminton or HipHop Abs. (Went back to boxing again and just finished my 10th session, I will try Muay Thai this coming year)

Finish all the books that’s been accumulating dust over the past months. Hmmmmm…more than 10 books. Good luck to me! =D (Ummm…next please. Hey, I did say good luck…Hahaha)

Hopefully, more projects to come my way. ^_^ (Keep ‘em coming! I have two freelance writing and one social media jobs right now. Hope to keep and balance all of them so they can help pay my bills.)

AND FOR MY 2012 BLUEPRINT

Furnish my house…all in black and white with a little splash of color

Find a stable job. Hahaha. I need to plan out my career before 2013.

 SURPRISE ME!

GOODBYE 2011, WELCOME 2012. Hoping you’ll be good to all of us…

HAPPY YEAR OF THE DRAGON!!!

Any basketball or Jordan fanatics are very much aware of the release of the Nike Air Jordan XI Retro Concord shoes last December 23. This shoes’ claim to fame was Chicago Bull‘s record-setting 72-win season and this Jordan-endorsed sneakers was the shoes that Michael Jordan wore during the Chicago Bulls’ 1995-96 championship run.

Jordan XI was released earlier at the Titan store (for members only) and contrary to their peaceful and orderly release, what happened to Nike BHS and other countries was the exact opposite.

Liz and I went at Bonifacio High Street last December 22, Thursday, to check out the happenings at Nike Park only to be shocked by the huge crowd that’s starting to swell as early as 10:00 PM. We actually have no plans to stay outside till the next day because come to think of it, the shoes will still be released the next day at 11:00AM. Well, we’re both first timers so we were not aware that Filipinos also have the capacity to camp out just for a Php7,995 worth of shoes. I thought camping outside is ony possible for people who want to watch Wowowee, Will Time Big Time, and other noon time shows.

Anyway, since we’re already there and have no more choice, we just queued, unsure if we’re on the right line or not. See, there are actually three lines, one for the VIP card holders and two for the regular customers. Nike staff told us that there will only be two lines (VIP and regular), but apparently, a group of people, who claims was already there since Monday (which is just weird and impossible) gave out numbers to other fanatics to testify they were the first people at Nike BHS. In short, they organized themselves already. Heck, the handwritten numbers even have signature at the back. Who’s signature was it anyway, Jordan?!

Anyway, to cut the story short, there were three lines since no compromise was made between the two groups of regular customers. Since we were totally unprepared that the hunt for that controversial shoes would be that big here in Manila, we went to BHS without eating our dinner first, good thing my cousin and a friend went to BHS to trade places with us while we eat our late dinner.

Almost 13 hours of waiting. Never in my life have I imagined myself camping out just for a pair of shoes. 13 hours outside Nike Park, sitting, standing, walking, trying to catch some sleep. Enduring the chilly night, mosquito bites, drizzle in the morning and extreme heat at lunch time. The weather was just crazy and so were the people who were already getting anxious due to lack of sleep and because of some people trying to squeeze their way in between people who are queued, or forming a new line trying hard not to be noticed. Mind you, there’s a sort of modus operandi there where adults use kids to line for them. There’s a group of people consisting of twenty kids, all lining up for the shoes. Are these kids going to buy some Jordan XI for themselves?! And no matter how hard you try to ask them to go away since most of them are just “singit”, they won’t budge a little bit. See, even in Nike release syndicates are present. I bet they are all resellers and hopefully, not taking advantage of the crowd by pickpocketing.

All in all, the crowd was actually behaved, not until Nike opened their store, inconsiderate of the organized line of the people who were patiently waiting outside since last night. In my thought, Nike BHS staff were just like “We don’t care about the effing lines you formed, no matter how organized they are. Just follow our own lines and the hell we care even if there will be a stampede!”

So yeah, there’s just one thing I need to tell Nike BHS…Before organizing a BIG RELEASE like that, make sure your staff are well-trained, organized and efficient. Well, unless they really want the people to go crazy over their shoes unmindful of possible chaos it would bring. THAT IS SO STUPID and MEAN!

Good thing Liz and I were able to score one pair each so we’re just thankful for that. Unlike in other countries, I must say that the Filipino crowd is way better and tamed. The chaos and hellish state outside Nike BHS store was mostly because of the unorganized and uncoordinated Nike BHS staff. So please, pretty please, next time, BE PREPARED and HAVE A LITTLE CONCERN to your customers. We’re not begging for your shoes, we’re all going to pay for it so don’t treat us like shit.

THINGS NIKE PARK, BONIFACIO HIGH STREET SHOULD HAVE DONE IN ORDER TO AVOID THE CHAOS THAT HAPPENED DURING THE NIKE AIR JORDAN XI RETRO CONCORD RELEASE

HIRE BOUNCERS. Admittedly, the chaotic crowd started when Nike Park opened and some people made a mad dash in front of the door unmindful of the organized lines made the night before. But IMO, this could have been prevented if there were at least three bouncers. Don’t they want to shed some money for bouncers? What’s some extra money to spend for bouncers in exchange for the safety of their customers and over all orderliness of the event? Your glass door is close to breaking down, I bet you wouldn’t want that to happen again, would you?

HAVE SOME CONCERN. I will reiterate it time and again, Nike BHS staff doesn’t care about their customers. Seems like all they care about was to sell some shoes and that’s it! While it was true that they didn’t advise people to camp outside their store, they should at least know that people won’t heed their call, considering they will be releasing a limited edition Jordan shoes. They have seen it coming, even the night before. People are already camping outside so they should have at least some back up plans to organize the people or even come a little earlier to check out the state of the crowd waiting so they can organize them ahead of time before the store fully opens. But instead, they came few minutes left before the opening, post two signages where regular and VIP customers should line up and voila! There was almost a stampede and they couldn’t care less. There were three lines, organized lines! At least one or two staff should have checked it first and just think of ways on how to use it to their advantage to avoid any untoward incidents. How about letting in five VIPs first, then get at least one from each two lines of regular customers at a time? Isn’t that more organized? At least the people would feel they are being fair enough.

Also, when we were able to get in and was telling one staff about how they should have avoided the chaos outside, this staff said “o sige, okay/tama na po nasa loob na naman kayo eh…” or something like that! I was like WTF?! So insensitive. So I said, “eh kawawa naman kasi yung mga nasa labas eh.”

STOP BEING BIASED. Okay, so not everyone will be given the chance to own this limited edition Jordan XI shoes, everybody knows that. But give people equal chance to at least have some hope to own one. Almost everybody in the crowd stayed for more than 12 hours for a measly chance to buy the shoes then all of a sudden you let one foreigner, who just arrived, in???!!! How could you?! The people are still cool with you letting almost all the VIPs inside first since that’s one of your rules, but letting one guy, a foreigner to say the least, go first instead of your fellow Pinoys who waited overnight, is just inhumane and well, racist! Just goes to show how other Pinoys look down to their kababayans. What a mentality! Letting that foreigner in even sparked the rage of the crowd outside. That is PLAIN UNFAIR and yet Nike staff couldn’t care less.

HAVE SOME EMERGENCY KIT READY. Since Nike BHS did not hire any bouncer, they should have at least some first aid kit handy just in case of any untoward incidents. The crowd may get a little more rowdy so you’ll never know.

Next year, Nike will be releasing again another limited edition shoes. As expected, people will be lining up for it again, but before doing so, ask yourself first if the shoes is all worth it. In my honest opinion, NO! Not unless Nike will fix its system first. Another launching or release is not bad, in fact it’s exciting and you get to know lots of people while camping out. I wouldn’t mind camping out again soon, (not very soon though. hehehe) but before that, Nike must first make it sure that they are already ready and organized enough to hold one. This also goes out to all brands who love releasing limited edition shoes unmindful of their customers. If you can’t find an effective way to handle rowdy crowds, just raffle entry stubs or just do it by email. A single pair of shoes is not worth anybody’s life.

‘Tis the season to be merry and ’tis also the season to stretch one’s budget for the annual gift giving. I must confess that I don’t have any budget to stretch so for those who received a Christmas present from me, I hope you appreciated it somehow…and for those who weren’t, there’s always next time, maybe if my budget permits. Hehehe. ^_^

Anyway, we all know that HE’s the real REASON for the SEASON and not those extravagant gifts, sumptuous food and expensive outfits. I was thinking of not writing this wish list anymore as it seems so materialistic, but anyway, since this has been a tradition for me for like two years already…here you go… =)

<del>Body Shop Paddle Brush, Php 1,250 (GRANTED by KUYA PATRICK of Team Kiko) </del> – If you are religiously following my Christmas wish list. You would know that I already wished for this brush two years ago. It was actually granted by our Chief-off-staff, RBD, as a Christmas present for our exchange gift. The old one is still okay but with few bristles falling off. =/ So yeah, I think I need a new one. The price now for the new paddle brush is almost double compared to the first one so I asked Body Shop why, considering that I like the look of the first one. They said that the wood of the newest brush is made out of bamboo that’s why. Nevertheless, I still think the old one looks better, only bigger. But still, I’m thankful Kuya Patrick grant my wish list. Hehehe. New brush for new year. ^_^

Though this one looks quite okay too. ^_^ Original price of the wallet is Php 1,780 but since the style that I want is discounted, (I think in all Pab Der stores) it now only costs Php 1,200. I asked my brother for the Pab Der wallet as a Christmas gift, let’s wait if my wish will be granted. ^_^

If you want to give me this present, just contact me and I’ll gladly accompany you to Zara. Hehehe.

Ikea Maskros Pendant lamp, (Php 3,500+)- I first saw this ceiling lamp at PNKY’s Travel Cafe in Baguio and I thought it would look good in my future black and white house. Buy the smaller one. Nearest Ikea in the Philippines is in Singapore. Hehehe.

<del>Black Tiles or Cash (GAVE THIS AS A GIFT TO MYSELF, NOT BLACK THOUGH, MORE DARK BROWN</del>)- I’m having my house in Laguna painted and well, tiled soon. Thus, I badly need black tiles to go with the white interior. I’m having a hard time finding something unique but affordable black tiles so it would be appreciated if you can give me ideas where to get one. Although I do have an idea already where to buy one, only that it’s dark brown and not really black. I know buying and handing the tiles to me is very strenuous and time consuming so to make purchasing easier, cash is very much appreciated. Hehehe.

RECYCLED WISH LIST:

Olay Total Effects 7 (the pink, not the yellow one) PHP 600+ – Just because I’m too lazy to buy one again for myself. I’m an Olay girl before but ceased to use it when its price went steep. As a bonus, you can get me its matching cleanser as well (PHP 200+).

Me & U pillow with pillow case PHP800+- (WEIRD, GAVE THIS EXACT PILLOW CASES TO MY COUSIN BUT I CAN’T BUY ONE FOR MYSELF. HEHEHE) I already have the body pillow case though the long pillow itself wasn’t bought at Me & U. Now, I want the pillow. Doesn’t need to be the matching couples pillow because my single bed can’t accommodate three big pillows, 3 small pillows and 2 stuff toys anymore. One would do. And remember, a pillow and a pillow case, not just a pillow case!
