Reading this 7th book of Bob Ong makes me feel like I am reading a horror komiks. Every page makes me want to flip again to the next page to find out what’s going to happen next.

At first, the book seems boring, but as you get to the middle part it, you’ll never want to put the book down again.

With the book “Ang Mga Kaibigan ni Mama Susan”, I can now say that Bob Ong is really a versatile writer. He made us laugh in his first book “ABNKKBSNPLAKO”, opened our eyes to the society we’re living in with “Bakit Baligtad Magbasa ng Libro Ang Mga Pilipino” and made us sad with “Mac Arthur” because of its tragic story. And now this book of Bob Ong will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat.

I never thought Bob Ong will write a suspense story because as we all know, almost all his books are funny and at times satirical so this is really not so him. But hey, turned out good so i’ll wait for more. Maybe a sequel?

All I can say is read “Ang Mga Kaibigan ni Mama Susan”…ALONE. Do it in one sitting so you won’t kill the momentum and suspense.

It’s Cupid’s month again and couples are definitely scouting for the best place to celebrate heart’s day with their special someone, which, admit it or not, is kind of stressful, especially for the male species. Good news is Pinoy All Occasions already did all the legwork for you. Below are some of the events, places and restaurants you can choose from this coming Heart’s Day, depending on your taste and budget.

1. Hot Air Balloon Fiesta, Pampanga. The annual Hot Air Balloon Fiesta is the most anticipated event in Clark Freeport Zone, Pampanga every second week of February. Heart’s Day usually falls anywhere during this one week festival but this year, the 17th Philippine Hot Air Balloon Fiesta will commence on February 9 until February 12, just two days before Valentine’s Day. Entrance fee is Php200.00.

The balloon fiesta aims to fuel the passion of people, both young and old, into flying to help the aviation industry and tourism in the Philippines. On the other hand, this event also helps to instill discipline and volunteerism to participating young pilots. Aside from the 6:30 AM flight of the hot air balloons, which is represented by various countries, the event is also jam packed with lots of aerial activities and exhibitions everyday like skydiving, paragliding, aerobatics, ultralight flights, RC aircraft displays, professional kite exhibitions and more.

The PHABF (Philippine Hot Air Balloon Fiesta) is definitely a one of a kind place to be with your love one to celebrate Valentine’s Day. And any returning guests of the fiesta can attest that the balloon fiesta has been a witness to various marriage proposals already. If you plan to propose to your girlfriend in the most unique way, then how about a proposal in the sky sounds? If you want everyone to know how you love your girlfriend so much, go to PHABF, talk to the skydiving crew and ask if they can do you a favor of diving your marriage proposal banner for you. An act that will definitely sweep your girl off her feet that saying “no” wouldn’t be an option.

To complete the romantic experience, it is highly suggested for you to at least book an overnight stay to any hotel inside the Clark Freeport Zone. If you have more than enough budget and want to stay in a swanky hotel, you may try Fontana Resort and Country Club, but if you are working on a tight budget but still want an overnight romantic get away with your sweetie, then Clark Hostel, a cozy, boutique hotel inside Clark is definitely a must try. And since you are already in Pampanga, what’s a date without a dinner in a fine dining restaurant? C Italian Dining, located along Don Juico Avenue in Angeles City, Pampanga was said to be one of the best Italian restaurants in the Philippines. The place is always packed with people, especially during weekends so it is best to book your reservation ahead of time.

BUDGET: Starts at Php2, 000- Php6, 000 good for two (depends if you opt to stay overnight and eat at C’s)

2. The Oasis, Gateway Mall. Located right smack in the middle of Gateway

Photo taken from The Oasis' Multiply site

Mall in Cubao, The Oasis offers shoppers a breath of fresh air with their 450- square meter garden restaurant that opens up to the sky . Accentuated by towering 60-foot royal palm trees, exotic giant ferns, koi pond, small fountain and pipe-in music under the sun or blanket of stars, this floating garden is the perfect ambiance for a romantic date with your beau.

The place looks quite intimidating at first but surprisingly, a date at The Oasis is actually affordable as it has a wide variety of dishes from nearby restaurants like Rasa, Café Adriatico, Pizza Hut Bistro, Sachi and Itallianis.

Aside from candlelit dinners, The Oasis is also open for private functions, definitely a great idea for al fresco cocktail parties. Now who says Valentine dinners need to be expensive? At The Oasis, you can enjoy a lush tropical setting without having to drive hours away from Manila.

BUDGET: Php 2,000 good for two (depends on your choice of food)

4. Antonio’s, Tagaytay. Antonio’s was once named as the 5thtop

Photo taken from Antonio's Website

restaurant in Asia and it won’t be named as such for nothing. In fact, it was the only Philippine entry in Asia’s Top 20 for 2010/2011 list of the Miele Guide, which covers 450 restaurants in 17 countries.

The raves about this old mansion turned posh restaurant in the hilly and chilly Tagaytay are just too convincing that it’s hard not to give Antonio’s a try despite of its costly price.

Tucked in the countryside, this one-hectare compound has been a favorite spot for dinner dates, especially during Valentine’s Day so doing a reservation few weeks before your planned date is a must. In fact, some even put their booking as early as two months prior to their dinner date.

Aside from its delectable food, which are organically grown and harvested straight from Antonio’s farm, the restaurant’s perfect ambiance and service are just some of the things that make this place famous and the number one choice for people who have enough budget and willing to drive two hours away from Manila just to experience the best romantic dining anyone could ever wish for. Mind you, it’s hard to find any negative reviews about Antonio’s or maybe none at all, so that’s already a statement of how perfect Antonio’s is. Curious already? See and try for yourself to find out. And to quote the owner Antonio, “Antonio’s is much more than a restaurant. It is an experience — an experience that each and every guest should savor and share.”

BUDGET: Php4, 000 good for two

5. Yacht Cruise. How does the sound of cruising in a 70ft luxury yacht, feasting on a gourmet four course dinner while listening to a violinist playing on the background under moonlight sounds? Romantic? If this idea excites you, then celebrating Valentine’s with Real Yacht’s Valentine’s Cruise is for you.

Cruise in the sea of love like Gwyneth Paltrow and Huey Lewis in a two hour intimate dinner (fine dining set-up) with your partner and bathe under the stars and dress to the nines for a picture perfect photo souvenir with your special someone while onboard M/Y Shanti or Real Yacht’s “Party Yacht”. Nothing can be more romantic than having a date in a posh yacht, watching the city lights from afar with some sentimental music in the background. Riding a yacht is a rare experience as it is very expensive to rent one so might as well grab this opportunity.

This Valentine Cruise costs at a premium of Php3, 500 per head with only limited slots (10 couples) available so better make your reservations now. On the other hand, if you want a little more privacy with your valentine and got money to burn, then renting a private yacht isn’t a bad idea at all. Real Yacht also offers yacht rentals ranging from transportation services to event venues. This yacht company has been a venue of choice for private parties like debuts and weddings, promotional events, magazine pictorials, product launches and even movie shoots. Only goes to show that you’re in good hands if you want to prepare something extra special for the most special woman in your life.

BUDGET: Php7, 000 good for two

So he finally popped the question and with teary-eye, you said YES! You are now engaged, Congratulations future bride!

Planning your wedding can be pretty exciting and stressful but choosing the perfect wedding gown that you will wear on the day when you’ll finally say “I do” to you Prince Charming will probably be one of the most nerve wracking decisions of your life. Don’t fret, we’ve got you covered.

Donning the most flattering and eye-catching bridal dress is probably almost every woman’s dream, so before heading to the nearest bridal shop, here are few guidelines that will help all girls out there to get started to becoming the most beautiful blushing bride.

WEDDING THEME. Identifying the theme of your wedding is the first step in determining what kind of bridal dress you should wear. Will it be a strictly black tie event or just semi-formal? Wedding themes can also be anything from beach wedding, garden, fantasy down to the hip rockstar theme. Anyway, it’s your wedding, so whichever theme you choose will definitely determine the style of the wedding dress you should get. You wouldn’t want to wear a ball gown with matching stilletos in the beaches of Boracay, would you?

FIND YOUR FIT. Determining your body shape plays a very crucial role in finding the perfect wedding dress for you. Enhance your assets and natural features and downplay the areas that aren’t so perfect. Find a gown that will flatter your figure no matter what size or shape it is. One key to knowing whether the gown is perfect for you is if you feel good and comfortable in it. Wearing that mermaid or trumpet style wedding dress maybe flattering for your curvaceous body but if you can barely walk few meters while wearing it, ditch it!

If you have an hour glass type of body, meaning, having the right cuves at the right place, (big chest, big hips, and a thin waist) then a mermaid or trumpet gown works best for your figure. An A-line dress with a sweetheart neckline to show off your chest is also a great idea to celebrate your body.

For brides who are small on top and heavy on the bottom, a ball gown will do

wonders of covering your bottom half to give more focus on the upper part of your body. A pear-shaped body should shun away from tight fitting bottom like a mermaid-style gown as it will help draw attention to your bottom.

If you are a voloptuous bride with full breasts, a bit of a tummy, and round hips and butt, then a ball gown wedding dress will hide quite a bit and a scooped neckline will help open up your face while displaying your décolletage without being to revealing. Avoid a neckline that goes straight across as it will only make your bust appear even bigger. To hide the little flabs in the middle, opting for an Empire-waist wedding dress will deemphasize your waistline. It helps bring the attention on the upper part of your body and smooth out the middle.

Thin brides make a perfect fairy tale wedding princess by choosing a ball gown and a sheath. Avoid off-the-shoulder and halter neckline if your collarbone is too bony as it would look very unflattering. For petite women, A-line works well for your tiny frame. Find gowns with waistline above your natural wasitline to create an illusion of longer lower half. Shun away from ball gowns as it may be too overwhelming. You wouldn’t want to get lost in that voluminous skirt, would you?

DRESS FOR THE SEASON. Some tends to overlook this, but choosing the fabric for your wedding dress is as equally important as choosing it’s style. Choose a dress that makes you feel good. Destination weddings are popular nowadays so aside from considering the season, take into account the place where your wedding will also be held. Will it be an outdoor or indoor event? For weddings between February to March, it is best to use medium weight satin or cottonseed hulls. Your wedding or reception location may still have some cold days so make sure you also have a shawl handy just in case you need it.

For summer weddings, whether it be indoors or outdoors, choose a wedding dress that will keep you cool during the whole ceremony. Picking a backless or strapless gown made of lightweight material is definitely the way to go. You don’t want your make up to smudge and look wasted on your big day due to sweat. If you want some sleeves on your gown, consider having a lace sleeves or maybe a short mini wedding dress would do. Mini dresses for weddings are very popular nowadays for modern brides, so if you want to veer away from traditional bridal gowns, then mini dresses are for you. Mini dresses are great for beach weddings or any casual weddings, this can even be your reception dress as well.

If your wedding date falls during the months of November, December or January, don’t go heavy on your choice of fabric because tendency is, even if it is cold, once the room or place is packed, it will eventually feel warmer. Also, using light materials can be an advantage if you tend to sweat when nervous

PICK YOUR COLOR. The traditional wedding gown is white but who says you

always have to stick to the norm? Current trend right now is to add a splash of color in your wedding gown. Adding some oomph in your dress by adding a soft whisper of another color can sometimes enhance your beauty than the usual boring white. Adding a colored ribbon, beads or a hint of color in your train looks gorgeous so do not be afraid to experiment. If you are not that adventurous when it comes to clothing, then going for an ivory or beige gown also works.

THE RECEPTION DRESS. Some tend to skip this part for practicality, but getting a reception dress is very important for your comfort. Reception dress is still part of the wedding dress selection since this is what you are going to wear for the whole reception ceremony after you first dance with your husband. Having a reception dress is a wise idea if you want to keep your expensive wedding gown in a mint and pristine condition, keeping it away from food, fingerprints and spilled

beverages. Not to mention you will have the freedom to dance all night without worrying about itchy layers and accidental tripping.

The general idea is that the first wedding gown you will wear for the matrimonial ceremony will be more formal and traditional while the second gown will be more sexier and fun. Just don’t over do it, choose a short dress that still looks bridal because the last thing you would want is to blend in with the guests once you have made your change.

So, how do you choose the perfect reception dress that will still make you stand out among the crowd? First and foremost, find a dress that matches the style of your first gown. They don’t need to be identical, rather, create an element of contrast between the two to spark interest. Your personal style can be a big factor in choosing the perfect reception dress for you. The fun part in the selection of a reception dress is that this is a relatively a new phenomenon so there aren’t many rules that will get in the way of your creativity. Just keep in mind the venue and formality of the occasion so be wary not to go overboard. If you picked the right dress, whether it be short or long, you can still wear it in the future for other events.

Reception dresses can also go after your wedding theme. If your wedding theme is fantasy like Drew Barrymore’s “Happily Ever After”, then donning a stunning fairy wings with your white, flowy dress, flower crown and flower wand will instantly transform you into a blushing fairy bride.

GET SOME HONEST TO GOODNESS ADVICE. Troop to at least three

bridal shops with your girl friends or a mix of girl friend cousin and wedding coordinator if you happen to have one. Just make sure that these people will actually let out honest to goodness opinions on your choice of wedding gowns.

These people should have the courage and concern to tell you that your arms looks flabby with that spaghetti strap and your hips looks a little bigger on that mermaid style gown. On the other hand, even if you’ve been dreaming of wearing a ball gown for your wedding since you were a kid, but sad to say the style doesn’t flatter your figure and well, height, it’s time to open up your mind when shopping for your dream dress. Step outside of the box and try various styles, ask your friends for opinions. You may not know it but they may have better ideas than you actually thought. Show what you’ve got instead of hiding it, after all it is your big day and there’s no other option but to look fabulous.

How time flies, 2012 is here. The year the world is going to end, or so what almost everyone thinks. Blame it on the film 2012.

And as my traditional year end report, I will be presenting this time, in no particular order, the highlights of my year 2011. ^_^ (Thank God for the blessings!)

1. TRANSFER OF LAND TITLE UNDER MY NAME. I mentioned in my year ender last year that I was informed by my developer and PAGIBIG that the transfer of the land title under my name is currently on process. This year, I was able to secure a copy of the title with my name in it. ^_^ But I have to mention though that this is still not the original copy since my house is not yet fully paid. Nevertheless, this is still an achievement for me.

2. GETTING MY HOUSE FIXED. Finally, before Christmas, I was able to get my front yard landscaped, put a nice, loft type ceiling and paint the interiors white. I already bought some curtains and curtain rods and next on my list is having the floor tiled. I already alloted money for it so my target is right after New Year. Hopefully I can have my house furnished in no time. It will just be a studio type for now since I still don’t have enough money to construct a loft type house.

3. VIETNAM TRIP. I’ve been to lots of places for the year 2011 but my only international trip for this year, which is in Vietnam, is what I considered very memorable and special. Aside from the fact that it was a rather long vacation, not our usual 3 days and 2 nights stay, having a good company in the person of Liz, Hazel and Anne made it more fun. This historical and cultural trip to Ho Chi Minh is definitely one for the books. This is the first time we felt how’s it like to be a millionaire. Hehehe. The food trippings, shopping spree and drinking sessions every night were superb! Like Batanes, I would like to go back again to Vietnam very soon. I feel at home there even though I was having a hard time understanding their english at first. Well, we eventually get used to it after a day. ^_^

4. EXPLORING THE PHILIPPINES. Vietnam is our choice of international destination for 2011 but visiting local places in the Philippines is definitely something that I always look forward to ever year. Even though our budget is always limited, we never let money get in the way of our exploration. We always find a way to check out budget fares and affordable but nice hotels. ^_^ For the year 2011, I’ve/We’ve been to Guimaras and Iloilo (March) Marinduque (for the nth time), Corregidor and Palawan (April) Vietnam and Baguio (August) , Cagayan de Oro, Bukidnon and Antique (November). For the year 2012, our calendar is already full and cannot accommodate anymore trips, not unless they are for FREE. Hehehe. If you want to invite us for an all-expense-paid trip, check out our calendar of trips and try to squeeze in. Again, we only accept all-expense-paid trip. Hahaha. No more money to shed. Coron (March), Marinduque (April), El Nido, Palawan (June), Malaysia (September).

***********************************************************************************************************

Before laying out my blueprint for 2012, let’s look back on my 2011 blueprint and see if I was able to accomplish some.

I will get my house fixed so I can go there every week end and design it for the next Halloween and Christmas. Even studio type bungalow will do for now. (Hmmm…haven’t spent my Halloween and Christmas in my house yet but I’m on my way. It’s soon to be tiled.)

Exercise in whatever form. Boxing again, badminton or HipHop Abs. (Went back to boxing again and just finished my 10th session, I will try Muay Thai this coming year)

Finish all the books that’s been accumulating dust over the past months. Hmmmmm…more than 10 books. Good luck to me! =D (Ummm…next please. Hey, I did say good luck…Hahaha)

Hopefully, more projects to come my way. ^_^ (Keep ‘em coming! I have two freelance writing and one social media jobs right now. Hope to keep and balance all of them so they can help pay my bills.)

AND FOR MY 2012 BLUEPRINT

Furnish my house…all in black and white with a little splash of color

Find a stable job. Hahaha. I need to plan out my career before 2013.

 SURPRISE ME!

GOODBYE 2011, WELCOME 2012. Hoping you’ll be good to all of us…

HAPPY YEAR OF THE DRAGON!!!

Any basketball or Jordan fanatics are very much aware of the release of the Nike Air Jordan XI Retro Concord shoes last December 23. This shoes’ claim to fame was Chicago Bull‘s record-setting 72-win season and this Jordan-endorsed sneakers was the shoes that Michael Jordan wore during the Chicago Bulls’ 1995-96 championship run.

Jordan XI was released earlier at the Titan store (for members only) and contrary to their peaceful and orderly release, what happened to Nike BHS and other countries was the exact opposite.

Liz and I went at Bonifacio High Street last December 22, Thursday, to check out the happenings at Nike Park only to be shocked by the huge crowd that’s starting to swell as early as 10:00 PM. We actually have no plans to stay outside till the next day because come to think of it, the shoes will still be released the next day at 11:00AM. Well, we’re both first timers so we were not aware that Filipinos also have the capacity to camp out just for a Php7,995 worth of shoes. I thought camping outside is ony possible for people who want to watch Wowowee, Will Time Big Time, and other noon time shows.

Anyway, since we’re already there and have no more choice, we just queued, unsure if we’re on the right line or not. See, there are actually three lines, one for the VIP card holders and two for the regular customers. Nike staff told us that there will only be two lines (VIP and regular), but apparently, a group of people, who claims was already there since Monday (which is just weird and impossible) gave out numbers to other fanatics to testify they were the first people at Nike BHS. In short, they organized themselves already. Heck, the handwritten numbers even have signature at the back. Who’s signature was it anyway, Jordan?!

Anyway, to cut the story short, there were three lines since no compromise was made between the two groups of regular customers. Since we were totally unprepared that the hunt for that controversial shoes would be that big here in Manila, we went to BHS without eating our dinner first, good thing my cousin and a friend went to BHS to trade places with us while we eat our late dinner.

Almost 13 hours of waiting. Never in my life have I imagined myself camping out just for a pair of shoes. 13 hours outside Nike Park, sitting, standing, walking, trying to catch some sleep. Enduring the chilly night, mosquito bites, drizzle in the morning and extreme heat at lunch time. The weather was just crazy and so were the people who were already getting anxious due to lack of sleep and because of some people trying to squeeze their way in between people who are queued, or forming a new line trying hard not to be noticed. Mind you, there’s a sort of modus operandi there where adults use kids to line for them. There’s a group of people consisting of twenty kids, all lining up for the shoes. Are these kids going to buy some Jordan XI for themselves?! And no matter how hard you try to ask them to go away since most of them are just “singit”, they won’t budge a little bit. See, even in Nike release syndicates are present. I bet they are all resellers and hopefully, not taking advantage of the crowd by pickpocketing.

All in all, the crowd was actually behaved, not until Nike opened their store, inconsiderate of the organized line of the people who were patiently waiting outside since last night. In my thought, Nike BHS staff were just like “We don’t care about the effing lines you formed, no matter how organized they are. Just follow our own lines and the hell we care even if there will be a stampede!”

So yeah, there’s just one thing I need to tell Nike BHS…Before organizing a BIG RELEASE like that, make sure your staff are well-trained, organized and efficient. Well, unless they really want the people to go crazy over their shoes unmindful of possible chaos it would bring. THAT IS SO STUPID and MEAN!

Good thing Liz and I were able to score one pair each so we’re just thankful for that. Unlike in other countries, I must say that the Filipino crowd is way better and tamed. The chaos and hellish state outside Nike BHS store was mostly because of the unorganized and uncoordinated Nike BHS staff. So please, pretty please, next time, BE PREPARED and HAVE A LITTLE CONCERN to your customers. We’re not begging for your shoes, we’re all going to pay for it so don’t treat us like shit.

THINGS NIKE PARK, BONIFACIO HIGH STREET SHOULD HAVE DONE IN ORDER TO AVOID THE CHAOS THAT HAPPENED DURING THE NIKE AIR JORDAN XI RETRO CONCORD RELEASE

HIRE BOUNCERS. Admittedly, the chaotic crowd started when Nike Park opened and some people made a mad dash in front of the door unmindful of the organized lines made the night before. But IMO, this could have been prevented if there were at least three bouncers. Don’t they want to shed some money for bouncers? What’s some extra money to spend for bouncers in exchange for the safety of their customers and over all orderliness of the event? Your glass door is close to breaking down, I bet you wouldn’t want that to happen again, would you?

HAVE SOME CONCERN. I will reiterate it time and again, Nike BHS staff doesn’t care about their customers. Seems like all they care about was to sell some shoes and that’s it! While it was true that they didn’t advise people to camp outside their store, they should at least know that people won’t heed their call, considering they will be releasing a limited edition Jordan shoes. They have seen it coming, even the night before. People are already camping outside so they should have at least some back up plans to organize the people or even come a little earlier to check out the state of the crowd waiting so they can organize them ahead of time before the store fully opens. But instead, they came few minutes left before the opening, post two signages where regular and VIP customers should line up and voila! There was almost a stampede and they couldn’t care less. There were three lines, organized lines! At least one or two staff should have checked it first and just think of ways on how to use it to their advantage to avoid any untoward incidents. How about letting in five VIPs first, then get at least one from each two lines of regular customers at a time? Isn’t that more organized? At least the people would feel they are being fair enough.

Also, when we were able to get in and was telling one staff about how they should have avoided the chaos outside, this staff said “o sige, okay/tama na po nasa loob na naman kayo eh…” or something like that! I was like WTF?! So insensitive. So I said, “eh kawawa naman kasi yung mga nasa labas eh.”

STOP BEING BIASED. Okay, so not everyone will be given the chance to own this limited edition Jordan XI shoes, everybody knows that. But give people equal chance to at least have some hope to own one. Almost everybody in the crowd stayed for more than 12 hours for a measly chance to buy the shoes then all of a sudden you let one foreigner, who just arrived, in???!!! How could you?! The people are still cool with you letting almost all the VIPs inside first since that’s one of your rules, but letting one guy, a foreigner to say the least, go first instead of your fellow Pinoys who waited overnight, is just inhumane and well, racist! Just goes to show how other Pinoys look down to their kababayans. What a mentality! Letting that foreigner in even sparked the rage of the crowd outside. That is PLAIN UNFAIR and yet Nike staff couldn’t care less.

HAVE SOME EMERGENCY KIT READY. Since Nike BHS did not hire any bouncer, they should have at least some first aid kit handy just in case of any untoward incidents. The crowd may get a little more rowdy so you’ll never know.

Next year, Nike will be releasing again another limited edition shoes. As expected, people will be lining up for it again, but before doing so, ask yourself first if the shoes is all worth it. In my honest opinion, NO! Not unless Nike will fix its system first. Another launching or release is not bad, in fact it’s exciting and you get to know lots of people while camping out. I wouldn’t mind camping out again soon, (not very soon though. hehehe) but before that, Nike must first make it sure that they are already ready and organized enough to hold one. This also goes out to all brands who love releasing limited edition shoes unmindful of their customers. If you can’t find an effective way to handle rowdy crowds, just raffle entry stubs or just do it by email. A single pair of shoes is not worth anybody’s life.

‘Tis the season to be merry and ’tis also the season to stretch one’s budget for the annual gift giving. I must confess that I don’t have any budget to stretch so for those who received a Christmas present from me, I hope you appreciated it somehow…and for those who weren’t, there’s always next time, maybe if my budget permits. Hehehe. ^_^

Anyway, we all know that HE’s the real REASON for the SEASON and not those extravagant gifts, sumptuous food and expensive outfits. I was thinking of not writing this wish list anymore as it seems so materialistic, but anyway, since this has been a tradition for me for like two years already…here you go… =)

<del>Body Shop Paddle Brush, Php 1,250 (GRANTED by KUYA PATRICK of Team Kiko) </del> – If you are religiously following my Christmas wish list. You would know that I already wished for this brush two years ago. It was actually granted by our Chief-off-staff, RBD, as a Christmas present for our exchange gift. The old one is still okay but with few bristles falling off. =/ So yeah, I think I need a new one. The price now for the new paddle brush is almost double compared to the first one so I asked Body Shop why, considering that I like the look of the first one. They said that the wood of the newest brush is made out of bamboo that’s why. Nevertheless, I still think the old one looks better, only bigger. But still, I’m thankful Kuya Patrick grant my wish list. Hehehe. New brush for new year. ^_^

I’m having a hard time finding something unique but affordable black tiles so it would be appreciated if you can give me ideas where to get one. And remember, a pillow and a pillow case, not just a pillow case!

I’ve been a part of the search for Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations for three years already because of the nature of my job. No, I am not one of the finalists, let’s just say our office is pretty much involved in this annual search for youth organizations who have created huge impacts in their communities.

Being a staff in the Office of Senator Kiko Pangilinan, an institutional partner of the search, I’ve been involved in this annual search in various ways, but the 9th search for Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations is probably one of the most memorable TAYO searches I have experienced. Not only because I was chosen as one of the national judges for NCR but also because of the once in a lifetime opportunity to have a seat down chat with some of the TAYO 9 finalists, who, too much of my delight, emerged as part of the Top Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations this year. (5 finalists in our table won)

L-R Joeby Barrientos (Aklan Catholic College Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants); Rox Murillo (Industrial Engineering Council of the Cebu Institute of Technology-University); Cyril Sayre (Association of Locally Empowered Youth in Northern Mindanao); Lesly Anne Bangoy (MACO Youth for Peace); Rob Basco (Youth Solidarity for Peace); and Lea Asuncion (Indak Kabataan Youth Organization)

Indak Kabataan, a youth organization in a depressed area in Alabang, Muntinlupa, who’s main program “Organisadong Binyagan,” focuses on kids ages 3 and above in their community to receive the Sacrament of Baptism. The group raise money to fund the project by joining dance contests, cleaning canals in nearby communities, and through support from some City officials. Unknown to many, due to poverty in slum areas, some parents can’t even afford to have their babies baptized. And this is where Indak Kabataan Youth Organization (IKYO) comes in. All the nitty-gritty is covered by the group, the church, priest, clothes and a simple gathering after the christening.

NYC Chairman Leon Flores III explains all about NYC and its projects and advocacies during the NYC Bloggers Night

Personally, I must admit that This youth organization struck me the most because of how it helps rehabilitate juvenile delinquents, whom, they admitted, were mostly “drug addicts” when the group was formed on 2006. As I have mentioned, I was one of the judges during the NCR Area finals and I was moved by the story of Lea Asuncion, the group’s President and representative for TAYO 9. I thought to myself that the group has a lot of potential if only given the proper guidance and support. And in my personal opinion, helping CICL (Children in conflict with the law) prove that there’s always a room for change and growth really gives a direct impact, not only in their community, via their projects, but also in the lives of their volunteers. Congrats to Indak Kabataan Youth Organization for being one of this year’s winners. This group is a concrete example that everyone can change, especially the youth, if they are given proper guidance and care. Thus, as how they put it, the once “perwisyo sa komunidad” is now the “pag-asa ng bayan.”

On the other hand, another youth organization from Mindanao, called Association of Locally Empowered Youth in Northern Mindanao (ALEY NM) sparked my interest upon reading their group’s entry this year. Yes, ALEY NM was also a TAYO finalists last year but they weren’t able to make it to the Top Ten so I was happy that this year, they were able to make it.

Their project entry “Improving Food Security among Rural Youths and their Families” rings a bell, especially nowadays that food security is an issue that the Philippines should really focus on.

Cyril Sayre, one of the volunteers and this year’s representative of ALEY NM was very passionate as he was explaining to me their project entry this year. I find their project an out of the box way addressing food security in the rural areas of Misamis Oriental, which is also one reason why others may find it a bit odd. But hey, they won’t bag the the Lenovo Most Innovative Project special award for nothing. ^_^

But really, the technology or system that they use to produce vermi-composted organic matter as fertilizer mixed with human waste (feces and urine) is really brilliant. Not to mention they are also helping poor families to have their very own concrete toilets (yes, believe it or not, most rural families in their area still don’t have toilets) aside from teaching them the value and importance of backyard farming, by providing their beneficiaries with seedlings and teaching them how to grow it even if they don’t have their own backyards. (Most of their beneficiaries live in coastal areas)

Aside from vegetables, tree seedlings are also sold to be able to raise fund for their projects. These tree seedlings are commonly used for tree planting activities. “Food always in the home” is ALEY’s vision.

Me with Cyril Sayre of the Association of Locally Empowered Youth in Northern Mindanao

Another entry from Mindanao, specifically in Zamboanga City, is the Youth Solidarity for Peace – Peace Advocates. Like the two previous groups and projects I just mentioned, what could be even more timely, especially in Mindanao, but the issue of peace.

And like ALEY, YSP was also a TAYO 8 finalists but wasn’t able to make it to the Top 10 so I’m happy for the group that they were able to enter the Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations this year.

Robert Bacso, YSP volunteer and the group’s representative for this year’s search was overflowing with energy as he was explaining to us during the NYC Bloggers Night their project and how helpful their summer camps are, especially to the Mindanao youth.

Their project entry this year is “Peace Education through Summer Peace

NCR Commissioner Georg Nava explains all about the TAYO Search

Camps.” It is an initiative that aims to “build a peace constituency among children and youth through the culture of peace and framework. This summer camp is being held annually and is composed of youth leaders from different institutions, out-of-school youths, young professionals, as well as young people with special needs regardless if they are Muslims, Catholics, or are a part of the indigenous tribes. Good thing about this summer camp is that it’s TOTALLY FREE! YSP believes that conducting peace camps will help instill the culture of peace in the minds of the young people, which will eventually eliminate signs of apathy and violence. Very interesting indeed! He even told us that we can join in one of their summer camps if we wish. ^_^

By the way, after the awarding ceremonies in Malacanang last October 27, we congratulated Rob (Robert’s nickname) and he handed us (Liz Reyes and I) a sort of kit, which I really find very cute and creative by the way, and a book entitled “The Thread that Binds.” And based on the book’s introduction, “the book is not only a narration of what had happened in the project areas [jn Mindanao] over a period of four years, rather, they are an expression of what it means to be liberated from the grinding chains of poverty and disposession, to finally have something to hold on to, and to know once more what it means to be a human being.” Haven’t read the whole book yet, just scanned through the pages but it seems a nice read.

As how Rob would put it, they want people to see Mindanao in a different light. And one of their projects is actually to keep Mindanao away from the shadow of war, thus they have this vision of “terrorism to tourism.”

The creative YSP Summer Camp Kit and book given by Rob

I would love to get to know more the other groups as well because based on their introductions and project descriptions, their entries are very much interesting, but due to lack of time and for fear that this piece might go on forever, I would just like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to all the Top 20 finalists for being an agent of change at a young age. Truly, they are inspirations worth emulating. They give hope to our nation that there are still people who, despite their lack of resources and support from the government, still try to help their fellowmen the best way they can.

The average age of Filipino farmers, according to the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Food Sen. Kiko Pangilinan, is 57. Meanwhile, the average age of the Department of Agriculture‘s (DA) employees is mid 50′s. Aren’t the figures alarming?

To solve this hounding problem in the Philippine agricultural sector, DA Secretary Proceso Alcala announced during the third Cabinet Cluster on Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation and Food Security on Wednesday, July 13, that the Aquino government is providing scholarship grants to Filipinos especially the children of farmers to encourage them to take-up courses in agriculture.

“Ang malaking kikitain ang nag-aakit sa mga magsasaka para payagan ang anak niya na kumuha ng agricultural classes. Meron po tayong scholarship funds,” said Alcala.

In addition, the DA Secretary affirms that government programs in agriculture are now in place to help farmers and empower them with proper farming practices and the provision of funding support to increase their productivity in their respective communities.

“Kung iyon pong magulang (farmers) nabigyan natin ng pagkakataon na kumita na hindi naman po sila nag-aral ng kumpleto nung una pero dahil sa tamang tulong ngayon na technical, may access sa funds, with that marketing help (from the government), kumikita na po sila ng mas mahigit sa isang ordinaryong empleyadong sumusweldo sa banko,” Alcala stressed.

With the continuous rise in unemployment rate in the country, Sec. Procy said that it is more wise and practical to send children in agricultural schools which are more affordable than allowing them to take-up expensive courses that won’t land them a job.

Sec. Proceso Alcala said that the Department of Agricultureis working

hard to achieve and implement effectively government programs to meet President Aquino’s order to advocate and support the productivity of farmers in the countryside or rural areas where help is most needed.

On the other hand, the DA secretary also emphasized the need of Filipino farmers to undergo training in pest management, organic farming and other services to sustainable management of crops, livestocks and grains.

Sen. Kiko Pangilinan, who has been closely working with Sec. Alcala, said in one of his press releases that there are lots of opportunities in farming and what’s needed is actually a synergy of the whole chain–from the producers to the traders.

The Senator also wishes to change how farmers are generally perceived and turn them as “farmpreneurs.” (coined from the word farmer and entrepreneur)

“We will build their capacity to earn more by providing them the means to sell their products directly to market via our fellow AF2025 convenors. We also have in AF2025 the built-in network to ensure the sustainability of the project,” said the Senator.

Sen. Pangilinan along with the Department of Agriculture and the private sector convened the Agriculture and Fisheries 2025 (AF2025), gathering for the first time representatives of farmers, traders, suppliers and media to craft a long-term plan in addressing the country’s various agriculture and fisheries issues.

“This is an out-of-the box way of approaching decades-old problem of unemployment, poverty, and food self-sufficiency. And this is exactly the proverbial shot in the arm needed to boost further what the DA under the Aquino administration has accomplished. It is about time our agriculture and fisheries sector get the recognition and status that they deserve,” conveyed Pangilinan.

Just a stone’s throw away from Manila, approximately one-and-a-half hours travel time or 56 kilometers south of the Philippines’ capital, Tagaytay has become a favorite weekend getaway for people who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the metro for a breath of fresh air. Tagaytay is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the Philippines mainly because of its proximity to Manila and its cool weather all year round and scenic attractions.

If you’re planning to go there on a day trip, do try out the following activities to maximize your experience in the fast-becoming summer capital of the Philippines.

1. Taal Volcano trekking

If you enjoy looking at Taal Lake and volcano from afar, then why not experience seeing this famous lake and world’s smallest, active volcano up close? What also sets this small volcano apart from others is the fact that the Taal Volcano itself has a lake of its own inside its crater, which is aptly called the “Crater Lake.” If you plan trekking to the volcano’s crater, then you must be in Tagaytay as early as 6:00-7:00am so you can be back in Tagaytay by lunch time. It’s best to do the trekking at this time so you can catch the healthy morning sun.

At the Olivarez Rotonda, there are already lots of boatmen/tricycle drivers

who are willing to take you to the Talisay port in Batangas, which is the major jump-off point where boats are available to get you to the volcano island for a price of approximately Php250-300 (USD 5-6). The roundtrip boat ride costs Php 1,500 (USD 30) and is already good for a maximum of six persons. Upon arrival at the other side of the lake, you will be offered the option to do horse riding all the way to the volcano’s crater for a mere price of Php 500 (USD 10), which would take at least 45 minutes. If you want to exercise your muscles, then trekking by foot is feasible but would eat up an hour-and-a-half to reach the crater, depending on your pace. Also, bear in mind that the trail is really dusty and difficult so better wear your most comfortable outfit and shoes. Face masks and water are also being sold but the prices are kind of steep so it’s always advisable to just bring your own face towel and water to keep you hydrated. Don’t forget to put on a sun block as well for protection.

Upon reaching the crater, you will be greeted by the spectacular view of the volcano’s blue-green colored crater lake. White smoke coming out of the earth is also visible, a sign that the volcano is still active. You can also go down the highly sulfuric crater lake and swim but be sure to check first if it’s safe to swim during your time of visit. You wouldn’t want to damage your skin, would you?

For thrill seekers out there, you need not go as far as CamSur to experience the extreme water sport that is fastly becoming the newest craze for water sports lovers. Wakeboarding, a sport that uses a board and pulled by a cable, is now the newest attraction in Taal. For less than Php 2,000/hour (USD 40) (minimum of 3 hours), you can already avail of the wakeboarding lesson and a free use of the wakeboard, life vests and the speedboat.

2. Tagaytay Ridge Zipline

Photo taken from Tagaytay Ridge Zipline website

The Tagaytay Ridge Zipline is one of the newest attractions in Tagaytay. This new outdoor activity for adrenaline junkies is fast becoming one of the favorite tourist spots in the place. For as low as Php 200 (USD 4) per person, one can already experience the zipline and cable car ride amidst the scenic view of Taal Volcano and surrounding forest.

The 60km/hr thrilling ride, 300 feet off the ground that courses 250 meters long zipline is really a must-try for people who want to conquer their fear of heights. The single zipline harness can carry up to two tons, which is equivalent to seven sumo wrestlers so you can just imagine how safe this zipline is. All rides come with a free souvenir photo so you’ll have a keepsake of this experience.

The Tagaytay Ridge Zipline is located at Picnic Grove but is an independent company from the management of the latter.

3. Sonya’s Garden

Discover a secret garden, be a vegan for a day and indulge in a luxurious spa pampering at Sonya’s Garden.

Sonya’s Garden, which is located at Barangay Buck Estate, Alfonso, Cavite, is

Photos taken from Sonya's Garden website

just 10 to15 minutes away from Olivarez, Tagaytay. This used to be the private sanctuary of Europe and US expat, Sonya herself, who opened its doors to public on February 1998, just in time for Valentine’s Day. From then on, this hidden paradise in the rolling hills of Tagaytay has been a gracious host to lots of tourists and balikbayans who seek a simple and country-like atmosphere.

Sonya’s mouth-watering rustic cuisine is a must-try. Most of her dishes are made with fresh and organically-grown ingredients straight from the garden. Have you ever tasted fresh rose petals? Sonya’s Garden serve this on top of an organic green salad, which is a far cry from those served in commercial establishments. The all-you-can-eat salad and pasta are a majoy come on in Sonya’s—not to mention that it’s guilt-free, too.

Aside from its famous green menu, this garden also offers a bed and breakfast and a spa, where visitors enjoy the secret pleasures at Sonya’s. True to its advocacy, “The art of doing nothing,” Sonya also holds a class called “How to do nothing.” Imagine what you’ll be doing there…

Because of its rustic feel, coupled with a fragrant flower garden as backdrop, Sonya’s Garden has been a witness to hundreds of marriage proposals, pre-nuptials, weddings and honeymoons.

4. Bag of Beans

Bag of Beans is a must-try for those who want some good ambience to go along with their food. Their famous Alamid coffee is superb, but the first thing that you will really notice in this secret mini-underground paradise in Mendez, Tagaytay is its atmosphere. The famed Alamid coffee, which comes from the Philippine civet’s or musang’s droppings or waste, is said to be the most expensive coffee in the world because it undergoes a long process. The civet eats the coffee cherries. Fermentation process takes place in its digestive tract and excreted as whole beans to produce this rare and most sought-after coffee in the world. Alamid roasted beans sell for more than USD115 per kilogram.

The wooden picnic tables and benches, trees, flowers in bloom plus the sound

of the chirping birds, are just the perfect elements to create a very natural atmosphere. Add up the sweet and the makes-you-wanna-fall-into-slumber instrumental music being played and you’ve got the perfect place to hang out with family, friends or a special someone on a chilly weather, while sipping a mug of hot coffee. Go for Bag of Beans’ “Kapeng Barako” and Shepherd’s Pie, which they are famous for.

Bags of Beans is a cozy place to relax especially on late afternoons and early evenings. The place is surrounded with different kinds of antique lamps so I’m sure the restaurant looks fantastic in the evening. Before going home, be sure to buy some raisin bread at their pastry shop, trust me, they’re just too good to pass up.

5. Nurture Spa

Photo taken from Nurture Spa's Website

For spa-holics out there, Nurture Spa in Tagaytay is something that you should not miss. The place is kind of pricey compared to the best spas in Manila but the straight out of a magazine setting and the excellent service is worth it.

Some of the popular treatments in this spa are the Magsing-Irog Couples Massage (Php 2,800 or USD 56 for two people), a glorious blend of sandalwood, ylang-ylang, and lavender essential oils; Nilaib Spa Treatment (Php1,800 or USD 36), which makes use of steam pouches, instead of “hot stones” and is only unique to Nurture Spa; and the ultra relaxing Ginhawa Massage (Php1,800.00 or USD 36).

A trip to Nurture Spa would be perfect with your special someone or a close friend. Get a glimpse of this renowned spa, which was named as one of the Top 7 Spas in the Philippines according to Asia Spa Magazine and in the 28th Most Relaxing Spa in Asia by CNN Go Asia because of its indigenous ambience, spa healing treatments and alternative health programs.

*****************************************************************

How to get to Tagaytay:

By bus: You can ride the San Agustin Bus Lines at Cubao Station, just behind Ali Mall or you may also get a ride in Pasay bus station which is just behind McDonald’s, MRT Taft Station. Sign boards should read Tagaytay/Olivarez or Nasugbu, Batangas.

By car: Taking the SLEX Greenfields Exit is the best route to avoid heavy traffic. You’ll be passing by Pramana, Nuvali, Eton City and Paseo de Sta. Rosa.

Marinduque. Marinduque is a small heart-shaped island in the Southern Tagalog, which, coincidentally, is also in the center of the Philippines. Dubbed the “Lent Capital of the Philippines“, Marinduque welcomes thousands of tourists here during the Lenten holidays to experience religion and culture at the same time.

On the first week of Lent, which usually starts on Holy Monday, Morions or the masked Roman soldiers can already be seen roaming around the streets of Marinduque, or Boac, its town capital.
Tourists are also welcomed by the Morions at the Balanacan Port in Marinduque to give an instant feel of the province’s Moriones Festival.

The Senakulo, a Lenten play that depicts the life, suffering, and death of Christ, starts staging on the evening of Holy Wednesday. The Via Crucis or the Way of the Cross starts on the early morning of Good Friday. You have the option to go along with Christ, the other penitents, and Morions or simply watch–though it is highly suggested that you go with the Way of the Cross so you can also internalize Christ’s suffering and just consider it as another form of penitence. The Via Crucis usually starts between 7:00AM and 8:00AM and ends with a “crucifixion” before lunch.

The Senakulo ends on the midnight of Easter Sunday and with the most anticipated presentation of all, since the resurrection of Christ will be staged. Early morning of Sunday, most people run to the beach as a sign of celebration for the risen Christ.

When in Marinduque during Holy Week, be sure to take some snapshots of its famed Moriones Festival. Take a pose with some Morions or, specifically, look for the Morion Longinus. He’s easy to spot–he’s blind on one eye and is the most famous Morion off all. Read the Bible or, better yet, listen and watch the Senakulo carefully to know why.

2. San Pedro, Cutud, Pampanga. The Cutud Lenten Rites is famous for the re-enactment of Christ’s crucifixion, with the actual nailing of people on a wooden cross. Tourists and foreign media flock to Cutud just to witness the 55-year-old street play, thus, turning what is supposed to be a solemn religious celebration a highly commercialized one. Just a word of caution though: this is not for the faint-hearted. If the mere sight of blood makes you queasy and nauseous, then better not go here.

However, if you are into photojournalism, then going to Cutud is an experi

ence not to miss. The event has a VIP area for media and photographers so taking photos won’t be a problem. Just be sure that you can endure the heat of the sun.

Aside from the crucifixion, flagellants, also known locally as “magdarame”, walk barefoot around the town and whip their backs with a bundle of bamboo sticks at the end of a rope and use razor blades to cut their swollen backs so blood can come out.

3. Quiapo. Since most people head to their respective provinces during Holy Week, traveling around Metro Manila during Good Friday is always a breeze. In fact, Visita Iglesia in Manila has always been a tradition among Catholics who choose to spend Lent in Manila, and the Quiapo Church is probably one of the favorite churches among pilgrims.

During Good Friday, Black Nazarene devotees flock to Quiapo Church for the Black Nazarene procession, which usually starts as early as 5:30 AM. Various Black Nazarene replicas are also paraded along the streets of Quiapo while devotees go barefoot in imitation of Jesus on his way to Mount Calvary.

Biyernes Santo in Quiapo| Photo used with permission, by Liz Reyes

There have been various accounts of people who have touched the Black Nazarene are reported to have been cured of their diseases. Thus, like the actual Black Nazarene feast on January 9, towels and handkerchiefs are also hurleto the marshals and escorts guarding the Black Nazarene, requesting their cloths to be wiped to the statue in hope for a miracle.

Nearby churches that can also be included in your Visita Iglesia itinerary are the Malate Church, Binondo Church, Manila Cathedral, San Agustin Church, Santa Cruz Church, and San Sebastian Church.

On the other hand, the usual rowdy and busy Escolta and Delpan suddenly transform into peaceful streets during Good Friday–a perfect time for photojournalists to capture this very rare quiet moment in Manila through their lens.

4. Balaan Bukid Shrine, Guimaras. If you love outdoor activities, then trekking to Balaan Bukid Summit in Jordan, Guimaras is the best activity for you this coming Holy Week. Balaan Bukid, which means “Sacred Mountain” in the Hiligaynon dialect of Panay, is a pilgrimage site of Catholic devotees that sits on top of the mountain.

Balaan Bukid, Guimaras| Photo used with permission, by Liz Reyes

At the summit of Balaan Bukid is the Ave Maria Purisima Shrine where a chapel is marked by a huge, white cross. It is hard not to miss this large cross when you’re coming from Iloilo to Guimaras. Climbing Balaan Bukid is free of charge but be sure to bring lots of water to keep you hydrated, and put on some sunblock before climbing as the trek will take 45 minutes. On your way up, be sure to take note of the 14 Stations of the Cross.

Also, a local version of the Passion of Christ, called “Ang Pagtaltal sa Guimaras”, is performed during the Lenten Season. In 2009, a new kind of Christ’s Passion and Death on the Cross was experienced by the Guimarasnons and tourists as the stage play inspired by the Seven Last Words was transformed into a street play dubbed “Ang Pagtaltal sa Balaan Bukid.” “Ang Pagtaltal sa Guimaras”, which is already on its 35th year, was once called as the “Golgotha of the Philippines.”
